No. 6 NWC Concludes Regular Season with Win at Briar Cliff

Red Raiders secure No. 4-seed in GPAC tournament

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The No. 6-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (21-6, 11-5 GPAC) picked up a four-set victory on the road at Briar Cliff (6-22, 1-15 GPAC) Wednesday night to complete the season sweep and conclude the regular season, clinching the No. 4-seed in the upcoming Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) tournament.
"We did a great job of getting the win tonight," noted head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch. "We have had a rugged stretch of matches so to get another road win was really good to help secure the No. 4-seed in the (conference) tournament."

The Chargers came out firing on all cylinders in the first set, looking to defend their home floor. Briar Cliff used a 6-2 run to take a 12-6 lead in the opening set, though Northwestern would use a 5-1 run of their own to chip back within two points. The Chargers were able to finish off the set thanks, in part, to a 7-1 spurt to put them up 24-18, as they would ultimately prevail 25-21.

Looking to pick up a major upset win to end their season on a winning note, it would simply not be meant to be as the Red Raiders rallied off three-straight set victories. Northwestern really turned it on in the second set, jumping out to an early 9-3 lead and a 7-2 spurt later in the set would see the Raiders take the 17-8 lead, and they would close it out 25-14.

Early in the third set it would be a back and forth affair, but a 6-2 run gave the Red Raiders the momentum and they would not look back. They put the set away with a 10-1 sprint to jump out to a 24-13 lead, as an Alysen Dexter (So., Urbandale, Iowa) kill sealed the set (25-17).

The final set saw a little more fight from the home squad, but it would be Northwestern who would prevail 25-18. A 7-1 sprint gave Northwestern a comfortable 22-14 lead, which allowed a few more Raiders to see action on the floor in Katie Peters (Sr., Le Mars, Iowa), Emmy Wedgbury (So., Cedar Falls, Iowa), Olivia Schaub (Sr., Scottsbluff, Neb.), and Zavyr Metzger (Fr., Larchwood, Iowa).

The junior varsity team completed a perfect season at 20-0 with the 2-1 win over Briar Cliff to conclude their schedule.

"What a great season our JV volleyball team had this season, led by Bailey Van Ginkel and Shelby Hoff," said Van Den Bosch. "This group played as a team all season long and had awesome team chemistry! They had the mindset of 'how do I make my teammates better each day?'
