Raiders Drop Heartbreaker in GPAC Quarterfinals

Liv Reitsma (assists, 62) and Olivia Granstra (digs, 36) set new career-highs in the match

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 4-seed Northwestern College volleyball team (21-7, 11-5 GPAC) dropped a five-set heartbreaker to No. 5-seed Dakota Wesleyan (22-6, 11-5 GPAC) in the 2022 Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Quarterfinals Saturday night inside the Bultman Center.

Dakota Wesleyan took the first set inside a full Bultman Center in a tightly consisted opening set, 25-21. The momentum needed to prevail came with a 4-0 spurt thanks to four-straight kills to take a 20-13 lead. Despite the eight-point deficit, Northwestern would battle and bring the set to 24-21, before an attack error gave the Tigers the set one victory.

Set two proved to be one of the most entertaining of the match, going extra points. Northwestern used a 6-0 run to jump out to a 19-15 lead, trailing 15-13 when the run began. The Raiders would extend that lead to 24-17, thanks to another 5-0 run. The Tigers, however, would not be deterred. They used a match-high eight-point swing to take a stunning 25-24 lead, but Alysen Dexter (So., Urbandale, Iowa) would tie it back up at 25-25. Ultimately, some untimely mistakes would allow Dakota Wesleyan to take the set 27-25, jumping out to a 2-0 match lead.

Northwestern would storm out in the third set, to keep the match alive, with a blistering .485 hitting percentage (17 kills, 1 error, 33 attempts). The Raiders would jump out to a 14-7 lead, highlighted by a pair of kills from Macay Van't Hul (So., Rock Valley, Iowa), Bekah Horstman (Sr., Pella, Iowa), and Jazlin De Haan (So., Orange City, Iowa). Soon after, a 7-1 run would make it 21-10 Raiders, as kills from Dexter and Liv Reitsma (Fr., Papillion, Neb.) and a service ace from Jadeyn Schutt (Sr., Orange City, Iowa) sent the match to a fourth set, prevailing 25-12.

The Red Raiders would continue the fight and the comeback attempt would continue, as Northwestern would take set four 25-19 to force the decisive fifth set. It was another run (6-1), led by two kills from De Haan, that gave NWC a 13-10 run. It would go back and forth, until Northwestern rattled off seven of the last nine points in the set to take it 25-19. In that span, four different Raiders recorded kills.

The fifth set, to no surprise, also was a tightly contested affair. Northwestern used a time out trailing 7-4, following a pair of Tiger kills. The Raiders would respond with back-to-back points out of the break, making it 7-6 but DWU picked up a kill as the team's switched sides with it being 8-6 DWU. With DWU leading 12-9 and out of the second Raider time out, a pair of kills from Dexter and Van't Hul pulled NWC to within one (12-11). The Tigers would turn to Mariah Gloe, who delivered back-to-back kills, making it match point at 14-11. Gloe would finish the match with another kill, as the Tigers would take the set 15-12 and prevail in five sets over the Red Raiders.
