No. 7 Raiders Defend Home Floor with Sweep of (RV) Hastings

Raiders sweep sixth-straight opponent; extend win streak over Hastings to seven

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 7-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (17-4, 7-3 GPAC) continued their winning ways for the sixth-straight match with a sweep of the (RV) Hastings College Broncos (16-9, 5-5 GPAC), 25-15, 25-14, 25-23, inside the Bultman Center Saturday afternoon.

"I thought our 10-2 start was a tone setter for the evening," said head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch. "Our attackers were swinging with a ton of pace on the ball which I thought overwhelmed Hastings to start with."

Northwestern wasted no time in taking it to the Broncos, despite playing not even 24 hours later. Jumping out to a commanding 13-2 lead in the first set, it was all the Red Raiders needed to quickly close out the set (25-15). It was a balanced attack in the opening set, as five of the six Raider starters had at least two kills.

Hastings battled with the Red Raiders in the second set, but eventually NWC took control. Using a 5-1 spurt to take 11-8 lead, thanks to a pair of kills from Macay Van't Hul (So., Rock Valley, Iowa) and Alysen Dexter (So., Urbandale, Iowa). Through the first two sets, three Raiders had notched 5+ kills and setter Liv Reitsma (Fr., Papillion, Neb.) had 23 of the 24 assists.

Down, but not out, was the Broncos mentality in the final set. Hastings would lead for a good majority of the set. Despite a 5-0 Raider run to take an 11-9 lead, the Broncos responded with a 7-1 spurt of their own to take a 17-13 advantage and force a Red Raider time out. Hastings would build up a 23-19 lead, and on the verge of ending the Northwestern five-match sweep streak, but then Dexter went to serve. Dexter got the Broncos out of sorts and it would be Jazlin De Haan (So., Orange City, Iowa) who would put away the Broncos with four total kills, including three-straight to take the set 25-23 and win their sixth-straight via the sweep.

"Liv (Reitsma) did a good job of finding and using the matchups that were working throughout the match," noted Van Den Bosch. "I thought our back court defense was very good, led by Olivia (Granstra)."
