Horstman, Reitsma Block Party Lifts Raiders Over No. 9 DWU in Top-10 Clash

Raiders and Tigers split the season series for the third-straight year

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 6-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (19-5, 9-4 GPAC) remained in the thick of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) race and kept their chances to host a quarterfinal match of the conference tournament alive with a straight sets win over No. 9-ranked Dakota Wesleyan (20-5, 10-4 GPAC) 25-21, 25-20, 25-19.

"This was a good team win against a top-10 team. Defensively we were really good at the net in slowing the ball down and then our back court, led by (Olivia) Granstra, let nothing hit the floor as she notched 24 digs in three sets, along with 17 from (Jazlin) De Haan, made it hard on DWU," noted head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch. "Offensively, I thought all of our hitters scored well. Eight blocks by (Bekah) Horstman really set the tone at the net."

Behind an energetic Bultman Center with a supportive men's soccer squad and the Red Raider Athletic Band making appearances, the Red Raiders wasted no time in making a statement and looking to get revenge to the loss back in September in Mitchell. Already with san 8-4 advantage, the Raiders use a 7-0 run, forcing DWU to use both time outs, and took complete control of the set, leading 15-4. The Tigers responded with six-straight points of their own to make it 15-10, but head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch was able to settle the squad down with a time out. The Raiders were able to trade points the rest of the set, taking the opening set 25-21.

The second set began much like the first as Northwestern jumped out to an early 10-4, forcing the Tigers to burn another early time out. Northwestern maintained control the rest of the set, keeping DWU at arms length – even with a 5-0 Tiger run to cut it to 20-17. Ultimately, big swinger Alysen Dexter (So., Urbandale, Iowa) put away the final point and picked up her 11th kill of the match as Northwestern took the 2-0 match lead.

The Raiders kept the pressure on in what proved to be the final set. Tied at 4-4, NWC used a 9-2 run to take a decisive 13-6 lead and force a DWU time out. In turn, an 8-3 spurt from the Tigers cut the Raider lead to two (16-14). But a couple kills from Jazlin De Haan (So., Orange City, Iowa) and Bekah Horstman (Sr., Pella, Iowa) in a 6-1 Raider run sealed the set – and match – for Northwestern. Horstman would end the match with a beautiful swing to give the Raiders the 25-19 set three win.
