No. 6 Raiders Pick Up 20th Win of Season with Road Sweep of Dordt

Northwestern completes season sweep of Dordt; picks up 17th sweep of the year

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The No. 6-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (20-5, 10-4 GPAC) picked up their 20th win of the season, and 10th GPAC win, behind a straight sets victory (25-15, 25-19, 25-21) of rival and No. 22-ranked Dordt University (13-10, 7-8 GPAC) inside DeWitt Gymnasium Saturday evening.
"I thought we were the aggressors tonight and I thought that was key," said head coach Kyle Van Den Bosch. "Everybody did their role really, really well which is important to do on the road."

Northwestern made the 10-mile trip over to Sioux Center and dominated the first set, taking the 1-0 match lead with a 25-15 victory. The Raiders used a 9-2 run to silence the home crowd, as the Raiders would then cruise to the set victory. Sophomore Alysen Dexter (Urbandale, Iowa) put down five kills in the opening set and Bekah Horstman (Sr., Pella, Iowa) had three.

In the second set, the home squad showed a little more fight on their home court. The Raiders took a time out trailing 10-6 in the second set, but the Red Raiders would score four of the next five points out of the time out, forcing the Defenders to burn a time out now only leading 11-10. The two teams would find themselves deadlocked at 14-14 and two-point little spurt would give Northwestern some momentum. A massive block from Horstman and Jazlin De Haan (So., Orange City, Iowa) would give the Raiders an 18-15 and Dordt would burn their final time out of the set. Holding a 20-16 lead, the Defenders would cut it to 20-18 but the Red Raider big arms would lead Northwestern to the 25-19 set two victory. A massive set-ending block from Macay Van't Hul (So., Rock Valley, Iowa) and Savonne Sterk (So., Lynden, Wash.) gave Northwestern the 2-0 match lead.

"In the second set, Jadeyn (Schutt) turned the momentum with her serving which was really good to see," continued Van Den Bosch. "I thought our team defense down the stretch of each set was key. I also thought we served really well throughout the match which was good."

The final set saw NWC lead 8-5, but the Defenders used a 4-0 spurt to take the 9-8 lead, hoping to carry the momentum and salvage a set. Later, tied at 15-15, Jaidyn Teske (Fr., Eldora, Iowa) had a beautiful kick save that was finished by Horstman to silent the Defender crowd. Dordt used their first time out of the third set trailing 23-21, trying to curb the momentum of the Red Raiders. Horstman would finish off the match with her ninth kill of the night, as the Red Raiders complete the season sweep of the Defenders for the first time since 2019. The Red Raiders would score five of the final six points, using a four-point swing to win it.
