No. 7 Raiders Drop Heartbreaker to No. 2 Jamestown

Northwestern celebrates the six seniors on the 2022 team

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The No. 7-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (18-5, 8-4 GPAC) dropped a heartbreaker to No. 2-ranked Jamestown (25-2, 12-1 GPAC) in five sets inside the Bultman Center Saturday afternoon on senior day. Alysen Dexter led the match with 22 kills on a .217 hitting percentage.
 
The Red Raiders rode the energy that the senior day celebrations between the JV match and the varsity match, taking the opening set 25-16 in front of the Raider faithful and a gym full of Red Raider parents. A 6-1 run in the middle of the set made it 20-13 Northwestern, forcing a Jimmie time out. The Raiders would come out with big swings and service aces to put away eight of the next 11 points to take the set. Dexter (So., Urbandale, Iowa) led the match after one set with her five kills.
 
Despite Jamestown jumping out to a 5-1 lead in the second set, the momentum gained in the first set would come back to the Raiders. Going on small runs, neither team gaining a solid footing until a Dexter kill sparked the Red Raiders. Tying the game at 20-20 with the kill, Northwestern would rattle off five-straight points with Dexter at the serve line. They'd eventually prevail 25-21 thanks to a set-finishing kill from Macay Van't Hul (So., Rock Valley, Iowa).
 
The third set would see the second-ranked Jimmies begin to fight and claw their way back into the match. Arguably the most exciting set in the entire match, going extra points (26-24 UJ). More of the back and forth affair, until a 5-0 Jamestown run made it 16-11 Jimmies. Trailing 20-15, the Raiders would score four-straight to claw back to 20-19. With the Jimmies at set point (24-21), the Raiders rallied three points to tie it up 24-24, but a service error and Kalli Hegerle kill would give the set to Jamestown.
 
Jamestown would use different spurts to take the fourth set 25-17, thus forcing a fifth and decisive set inside the Bultman Center.
 
Northwestern jumped out to a 7-4 lead in the fifth set, forcing a Jamestown time out. Out of the break, Jamestown went on a 7-0 run to take the 11-7 lead. Despite back-to-back Raider points (11-9 UJ), the Jimmies would close out the final set 15-11 to take the match 3-2.
 
Northwestern celebrated six seniors prior to the match tonight in Taylor Meyer (Lake Park, Iowa), Katie Peters (Le Mars, Iowa), Olivia Schaub (Scottsbluff, Neb.), Bekah Horstman (Pella, Iowa), Jadeyn Schutt (Orange City, Iowa), and Emily Strasser (Sioux Falls, S.D.).

MATCH NOTES:
  • NWC hit .183 to Jamestown's .201 in the match, as both teams recorded an equal 55 kills.
  • In the first set, the Raiders couldn't miss, swinging .440 as a team.
  • Three Raiders notched double digit kills – Alysen Dexter (22), Jazlin De Haan (12), and Bekah Horstman (12).
  • Horstman hit a solid .345 on the match (12 kills, 2 errors, 29 swings).
  • Macay Van't Hul led the team with six blocks, as the Raiders had nine total as a team.
  • Liv Reitsma had 44 assists, her eighth 30+ assist game and fourth 40+ assist game.
  • A balanced night on the digs front as five Raiders notched 10+ digs, led by libero Olivia Granstra (19). Reitsma and Dexter both added 15 each.
  • Northwestern dished up 11 service aces in the match, the second-best mark on the season as Kiernan Groendyke, Jaidyn Teske, and Dexter each recorded three.
Up Next: Northwestern will conclude their regular season home schedule this upcoming Wednesday, October 26 when the Tigers of Dakota Wesleyan (20-4, 10-3 GPAC) make the return trip to Orange City. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m.
