Raiders Drop A Top-10 Road Battle to No. 6 Concordia

Liv Reitsma set new career-high with 58 assists

SEWARD, Neb. – The No. 7-ranked Northwestern College volleyball team (18-5, 8-4 GPAC) travelled to Seward, Neb. on Saturday for a top-10 showdown with No. 6-ranked Concordia University (17-3, 8-3 GPAC), falling in a tightly contest five-set match (22-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 9-15).

All five sets proved to be tightly contested, as both teams showed just why they are ranked inside the top-10 of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) volleyball poll. Of the first four sets, no set was decided by more than three points as two finished 25-22, one in favor of each side.

The Bulldogs would prevail in the opening set in front of their home crowd, with the 25-22 victory. Leading 24-20, Northwestern battled to make it 24-22 thanks to kills from Jazlin De Haan (So., Orange City, Iowa) and Bekah Horstman (Sr., Pella, Iowa). A kill from the team's leader in kills, Gaby Nordaker was the final point the Bulldogs needed to take the set.

Northwestern jumped out with the first four points of set two. They ultimately scored eight of the first 11 of the set, racing out to an 8-3 lead. The Bulldogs would chip away, always remaining within striking distance, but the Raiders kept them at bay. Despite a desperate last push by the Bulldogs to make it 24-23 NWC, an attack error from Camryn Opfer gave the Raiders the 25-23 set two victory.

Set three was back and forth until Northwestern held a 10-9 advantage. Concordia would use a five-point swings to take the 14-10 lead, but a three-point Raider swing would make it 15-14 CUNE. It would be the Bulldogs who, ever so slightly, maintained control of the set to take the set 25-23, and the 2-1 match lead.

Northwestern would not be deterred, as they needed to take set four to keep their hopes alive – and that they did. The fourth set saw a game of runs a four-point Raider and a five-point Bulldog run would make it 11-9 Concordia. Northwestern would use small spurts of three-point swings, three times, to eventually take the set. Alysen Dexter (So., Urbandale, Iowa) would notch the final kill needed to send the match to a decisive set five.

As expected based on the rest of the match, set five proved to be nothing short of a battle. Ultimately, after switching sides mid-set, the Bulldogs used a five-point swing – and scoring seven of the last eight set points – to take the final set (15-9) and the match (3-2).

  • Both offenses got big swings in as both teams hit .200+ on the match, but the defense was just as good, combining for 22 blocks in the match.
  • Northwestern hit .217 as a team, led by Bekah Horstman with a .256 clip.
