Raiders Split Final Two Fall Matches

NWC ends fall season with 2-1 record

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Northwestern College men's tennis team (2-1, 0-0 GPAC) downed their second Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) foe of the fall season, blanking the Mount Marty Lancers (0-1, 0-0 GPAC), before falling to Iowa Central Community College (1-0) 7-0.

The match started on the right foot, as the Raiders breezed through doubles play with 6-2, 6-1, and 6-0 victories. The duo Collin Harmelink (So., Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Arthur Vicente (Fr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) picked up their first doubles win of the season, downing Mount Marty's Moreno and Gomez.

The Raiders then went on to sweep the singles matches. David Bomgaars (So., Aurora, Colo.), Leandro Costa (Fr., Caratinga, Brazil), and Brian VandenBerg (Sr., Mason City, Iowa) all moved to 2-0 on the season. Harmelink and Albert Segura (So., Las Palmas, Spain) both picked up their first wins.

"While I was happy with the 7-0 victory, I was most happy with the way we got better in these matches that we dominated," said head coach Monte Tilgner. "It is easy in a match like that to kind of coast to a win but the guys did a great job of working on things to improve their game, staying focused, and getting better. I cannot really single any individual out in this one, but was very happy with the play of all the guys."

"We close out our fall season playing a very good junior college in Iowa Central. They typically are ranked in the nation at the junior college level. Although we did not win any matches, we played well," noted Tilgner. "Albert in the 1 spot and Dave in the 3 spot both lost in a super tie tiebreak. Our number 2 doubles team played an excellent match and lost in a tiebreaker as well. We saw great improvement over the fall and are looking forward to the spring."

Results of both matches can be found linked above, along with the season stats for the Red Raiders.

Up Next: Today concluded Northwestern's fall schedule. The Red Raiders will return to the courts on Saturday, February 4 when they hit the road for Mount Vernon, Iowa to battle the Rams of Cornell College.
