ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- The Northwestern College men's tennis team (1-0, 0-0 GPAC) played host to the Beavers of Buena Vista University last night, September 15, prevailing 4-3.
Head coach
Monte Tilgner had this to say about his squad, "It is always good to get a win, especially in your first match of the year. Overall, we were little tight with this being our first match and having some young guys playing. Three of the six who played singles and another who played doubles are freshmen. Our number one doubles team of
Brian Vanden Berg and
David Bomgaars played very well and won easily 6-2. Our number two doubles team lost a close match and we lost the doubles point when we dropped the number three doubles match as well. We won 4 of the 6 singles matches which clinched the overall match for us. Our top 3 players all played well winning in straight sets.
Brian Vanden Berg led the team and played very well winning 6-1, 6-1.
David Bomgaars overcame some nerves and won 6-4, 6-3, and fellow freshman
Collin Harmelink played well winning 6-4, 6-1.
Nick VanRijs won the deciding match 10 to 2 in a 3rd set super tiebreaker."
