The Northwestern College men's tennis team lost its GPAC opener to Doane 7-0 in a match played this afternoon at the Newburg Held Tennis Courts in Crete, Neb.
Northwestern is 0-1 in the GPAC; 4-5 overall; Doane moves to 7-6.Â
Raider sophomore
Brian Vanden Berg pushed Jorge Chevez, the No.43 player in the NAIA, to three sets in the No.1 singles match, winning the first set 6-4 before dropping the last two sets 6-2, 6-4.Â
"I was very happy with how we played against one of the top teams in the GPAC," said Northwestern head coach
Monte Tilgner. "We had matches much closer than the final scores in doubles, and also played well in singles. The highlight of the day was in the No.1 singles match which pitted Brian VandenBerg against probably the top individual in the conference, Jorge Chevez. Brian won the first set 6-4, lost the second set 2-5, and lost a heartbreaking third set 6-4. All the other matches were over and both teams watched some incredible tennis in the third set. I think it showed the heart of our team and that we will battle to the end."
Northwestern will play Hastings on Saturday.
