Red Raider bats came alive in a 14-4 (8 innings) win over Park University - Gilbert (Ariz.) in the second game on the first day of the Tucson Invite.Northwestern dropped game one to Presentation (S.D.) 10-4.
Northwestern improves to 4-6 on the season and will play a doubleheader against Mount Marty (S.D.) on Tuesday, March 3.
Five different players recorded two hits in the Red Raiders game two win, led by Colton Harald, who went 2/4 with four RBIs and three runs scored.
Kip Cullinan went 2/5 with an RBI and two runs and
Drew Schutt (2/3, Run, RBI),
Josh Fakkema (2/3, 2 RBI, Run) and
Jaden Snyder (2/2, 2 RBI, Run) were the other top hitters.Â
Brady Roberts (1-0) picked up his first win of the 2020 season, giving up seven hits and four earned runs in five innings.
Evan Olesen pitched one-hit ball over the final two scoreless innings.Â
Northwestern pushed four runs across in the bottom of the first on an RBI double from Harold and consecutive two-out RBI singles from
Noa Vogel and Fakkema. Harold added an RBI ground out in the bottom of the second, scoring Snyder, to put the Red Raiders in front 5-2.Â
Leading by just one (5-4), the Red Raiders scored another run in the bottom of the fourth after back-to-back singles by Cullinan and Schutt followed by a double steal which plated Cullinan.
Northwestern put the game away with four runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single from Harold. Another run came across in the sixth and the Red Raiders ended it with a three-run seventh, the final run coming across on a Jacob Kindhaart single.
Park University - Gilbert totaled eight hits, two by Julian Garcia-Schroeder and Matthew Armendariz. Aaron De Groot (2-4) took the loss, giving up three hits, four runs in 2/3 inning.Â
Game One: 10-4 loss vs Presentation
Tied at four, Presentation scored two go-ahead runs in the bottom of the seventh and went on to defeat Northwestern 10-4 in the first game. The Saints tallied four insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Northwestern totaled seven hits against the Saints, led by Harold and Cullinan, who both had three hits. Vogel added the other hit for Coach Wede's squad.Â
Both teams pushed three runs across in the first;
Sutton Derr reached base after a Saints error and scored on a triple from Harold. Cullinan followed with a single, scoring Harold and Cullinan crossed home plate after a stolen base, a groundout and passed ball.Â
Presentation scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of a couple of Red Raider miscues. The Saints went ahead with a run in the third only to have Northwestern tie it with a run in the sixth. Vogel led off with a double, advanced to third on a fly-ou and scored on a
Zachary Rosson groundout.Â
Dylan Kirkeby pitched the first 2.1 innings, striking out four, followed by
Alec Rickabaugh who pitched 3.2 scorless innings.
Brett Shelton (L: 0-3) allowed two unearned runs in the seventh and took the loss.Â
Colin Crandall (1-0) earned the win for Presentation, allowing five hits and three earned runs in six innings. Chris D'Amico, Kyle Angielski and Trent Williams all had two hits for the Saints.
