Baseball Splits With Mount Marty

The Red Raider baseball team raced out to an 11-0 lead and held off a late Mount Marty comeback to defeat the Lancers 15-13 in game one of a double header played today in Tucson, Ariz. Northwestern dropped game two 6-5.

Northwestern is now 5-7 this season and will play Bethesda (Calif.) and Concordia (Minn.) on Wednesday.

Game One:  15-13 win

The Red Raiders continued to pound opposing pitchers, totaling 14 hits and 15 runs, in its game one win against Mount Marty. Drew Schutt led the way, going 3/5 with two runs and five RBIs. Four Red Raiders, Sutton Derr, Colton Harold, Isaac Thurm and Zachary Rosson, all had two hits; Derr and Harold combined to score six runs at the top of Head Coach Brian Wede's line-up. Jaden Snyder hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot to start the second inning.

Luke Hughes (1-0) earned his first win of the season, giving up eight hits and six runs over five innings. Brady Nicolet picked up the save, getting the final out of the game with the tying run at the plate. 

Wede's squad jumped out to an 11-0 lead, pushing five runs across in the first and six more in the top of the second. Mount Marty answered back with three in the bottom of the second but the Red Raiders scored another run in the third to take a 12-3 advantage. 

With the Red Raiders up 15-7, Mount Marty scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh before Nicolet ended the Lancers improbable comeback.

Cole Anderson led the Lancers with three hits and four RBIs; Charlie Illg also had three hits and scored three runs.

Jared Miller (L) took the loss, giving up six runs in one inning.

Game Two: 6-5 loss

Mount Marty scored two unearned runs in the top of the seventh inning to come back and defeat Northwestern in game two, 6-5. 

The Red Raiders went ahead in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring two runs, all with two outs, and chased Lancers' starter Gavin Schultz. Schutt and Noa Vogel drew back-to-back walks and Alex Fuhs, running for Schutt, came around to score after a double from Josh Fakkema. Thurm followed with an RBI single that scored Vogel to put Northwestern up 5-4.

The Lancers came back with two runs on one hit and a couple of Red Raider errors. Northwestern had the tying run at second and winning run at first with one out in the bottom of the seventh until a game-ending 1-6-3 double play.

Ben Zeutenhorst picked up the no-decision, giving up five hits and three runs in five innings. Ryan Reynolds (0-2) took the loss, striking out two in one inning of work.

Six different Red Raiders had one hit each; Derr, Harold, Schutt, Fakkema, Thurm and Snyder.

Nick Iossi (W) pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn the win. Billy Hancock led the Lancers at the plate, going 2/4 with three RBIs.
