Northwestern came up short in a crucial doubleheader played against Mount Marty this afternoon, 6-2 and 8-3, in Orange City. The Red Raiders fall back to .500 in conference play at 9-9, 16-21 overall, with four games left in the regular season.
The Red Raiders held a lead in both contests but were outscored by the Lancers 12-0 over the final four innings in the two games.
Emma Scnell (10-13) took the loss in game one, yielding 10 hits, five runs while striking out three in six innings. Both
Madison Beaver and
Devin Dreesen totaled two hits each and
Jennifer Boeve drove in both runs with a third-innng single.
With Northwestern up 2-1, Mount Marty went ahead for good with two runs in the top of the fourth on the first of two home runs by Rylee Denemy and single from Melissa Richert. The Lancers added two more runs in the sixth and another in the seventh on Denemy's second home run, a solo shot off
Samantha Ubben.
Denemy went 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs while also picking up the win in relief. She allowed five hits and two runs over the final five innings. Bianca Minor pitched the first two scoreless innings.
Northwestern scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead in game two.
Jordyn Kramer belted her first collegiate home run to lead off the inning, followed by a double by Beaver who came around to score after a single by
Emily Bosch, who advanced to second on the throw. Bosch then stole third and scored on a squeeze bunt by Boeve.
The Lancers, however, answered with three runs in the fifth, taking the lead for good off NW starter
Sydnee Isom (3-3). Mount Marty added four insurance runs in the sixth off Ubben (3 runs) and Schnell (1 run) to put the game away.
Isom pitched the first 4.2 innings, giving up five hits and three earned runs. Bosch led Coach Bouman's squad offensively, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and run.
Makenzi Howard led the Lancers, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs and three runs scored; Paige Kramer, Amber Writer, Jaden Bly and Denomy all had one hit.
