Fourth Quarter Surge Leads To Hastings Win

#11 Northwestern was outscored 26-18 in the final quarter in losing to #6 Hastings 72-62 in a conference match-up between ranked teams played today at the Bultman Center.

The loss snaps the Red Raiders two-game win streak as they drop to 4-2 in the GPAC, 8-2 overall; Hastings stays unbeaten, improving to 12-0 overall, 6-0 in league play.

A two-point basket from Devyn Kemble put Northwestern up for the final time (54-52) with seven minutes left to go in the fourth quarter. Hastings came back with a 12-0 run, holding the Red Raiders scoreless for over three minutes, to take a 64-54 lead. A three-pointer by Taylor Beacom initiated the Broncos' run and a basket by Shandra Farmer marked the end other surge with 3:05 left.

Sammy Blum drained a three-pointer following a Northwestern timeout to cut to seven and three free throws by Kemble made it a six point game (66-60) with one minute left but the hosts would not get any closer.

Despite a season-low shooting percentage of 34%, Northwestern shot well from beyond the arc, making 11 of its 23 three-point attempts for 48%. The Red Raiders made all five of their free throw attempts but were outscored 17-5 from the charity stripe by the Broncos.

Bre Schuiteman led Northwestern with 15 points and Kemble netted 11, nine coming in the final quarter. Hannah Nerem came off the bench to score 10 while both Alexis Toering and Taylor VanderVelde grabbed 10 rebounds, a career-high for Toering.

Hastings used an 8-2 run over the final the seven-plus minutes to open up a 14-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Broncos extended their lead to eight (26-18) until a three-pointer by VanderVelde began a 9-3 NWC run to make it a two-point game by halftime, 31-29.

The teams played even (15-15) in a third quarter that had three ties and six lead changes, putting the score at 46-44 Broncos.
