Devyn Kemble poured in a career-high 18 points and
Alexis Toering scored 17 in leading 12th-ranked Northwestern to a 95-87 road win over Midland in a GPAC match-up played this afternoon in Fremont, Neb.
The win improves Northwestern to 5-2 in the GPAC, 9-2 overall, with one more non-conference game (vs Waldorf) prior to the Christmas break. Midland falls to 1-6 in the GPAC, 4-9 overall.
Northwestern shot 89% (16/18) in a high scoring first quarter that ended with the Red Raiders up 36-21. Up by two (16-14), Northwestern outscored Midland 12-1 over a three-minute stretch, led by
Hannah Nerem and
Emilee Danner who both scored four points during the run. A three-pointer by
Bre Schuiteman ended the scoring in the opening period.
The Red Raiders continued to shoot well and outscored the hosts 21-13 in the second quarter to take a 57-34 lead by halftime. Northwestern shot 70% in the first half; Midland 59% from the field.
Maddie Jones converted a three-point play to cap an 11-3 Northwestern run at the start of the third quarter as the Red Raiders had their largest lead, 73-45, at the five-minute mark. Midland, however, closed the period with an 18-3 run, scoring nine of the final 10 points, and cut the gap to 76-63.
The teams traded baskets during the first five minutes of the fourth quarter; Northwestern rode the hot shooting hand of Toering, who scored nine straight points for Coach Yaw's team during this stretch. Midland made one last push, using a 10-4 run, to get within six (89-83) with one minute left but Kemble scored a lay-up and both she and
Taylor VanderVelde, went 4-for-4 from the free throw line to clinch it.
Northwestern shot 56% for the game, cooling off to 39% in the final half. Kemble went 7-for-12 from the field en route to an 18-point effort. Toering was 8-for-10 from the floor and pulled down nine boards, one shy of a double-double.
Sammy Blum and
Hannah Nerem both scored 13 points and Danner added nine points coming of the Red Raider bench. Northwestern ourebounded Midland 27-24 and forced 20 turnovers; VanderVelde dished out four assists.
Amanda Hansen led all players with 25 points and Sam Shepard scored 13, including three three-pointers. Midland shot 60% for the game, 36% (4/11) from the arc.
