Red Raiders Upset #14 Marymount

The Red Raiders went on the road Thursday to Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif. to take on Marymount California University. The Raiders came out victorious in a match that was a high scoring affair.

The 3-2 victory put the Raiders to .500 at 3-3 and drops the Mariners to 2-2-2.

Northwestern started off the scoring in the 12th minute when Anselmo Kim sprung Tyler Limmer through to the right side of the goal and Limmer hit a strike to the back post into the back of the net. It was Limmer's 3rd goal of the year and Kim's 2nd assist. The Raiders took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

The second half started off with bang as Anselmo Kim put away his 2nd of the season 52 seconds into the half. The goal was unassisted.

The Mariners responded in the 54th minute off a ball that bounced to Nathaniel Van Der Walt after a 50/50 challenge with Matt Scott saw the ball squeak to the weak side where Van Der Walt tapped in his goal.

The Raiders earned back a 2 goal lead after Tyler Limme sprung Alex Schussman on a nice little ball that saw Schussman in on goal with the keeper. Schussman lifted the ball with his left foot over the keeper for a finish that trickled over the goalline. The cheeky finish was Schussman's 2nd on the year and Limmer's 6th assist.

The Mariners bounced back to cut the lead to one after a bouncing ball in the box was bashed home by Pedro Campos.

The game took a turn when Barak Moshe earned a straight red after berating the ref for a call on a teammate. The straight red put the Mariners down a man and they could not sustain an attack that could put the Raiders under.

The Raider got of 15 shots and 12 of them were on goal while Matt Scott made 5 saves on the day.

"To go on the road and get a win against a top 25 team is not easy and we just went halfway across the country and did it," commented head coach Dan Swier. "It was a great effort by the guys today. We dictated the tempo of the match. We defended with grit. We finished our chances. That's what it takes to beat teams like Marymount.  Now we are hoping to enjoy and cherish this trip and this experience together."

The Raiders conclude their west coast road trip with a game against La Sierra University on Saturday, Sept. 15th at 10pm cst.
