Emma Schnell pitched her second consecutive shutout in leading (RV) Northwestern College to a 5-0 win in game two of a softball doubleheader against Mount Marty played tonight in Yankton, S.D. The Red Raiders dropped game one 9-5 and move to 14-4 in conference play, 29-8 overall, with two games left in the regular season.
Schnell, now 15-2 on the year, allowed just six hits, walked one and struck out two in seven innings, earning her third shutout of the season. The freshman lowered her GPAC-leading earned run average to 1.45 and has pitched 15 consecutive scoreless innings.Â
Offensively, Northwestern totaled seven hits, led by
Katie Elliott who went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, and
Madison Beaver, who went 2-for-3 with a triple and RBI.
Jessica Sandbulte,
Emily Bosch and
Jensen Boger all had one hit each.
After a scoreless first inning, Northwestern erupted for three runs in the second to take the lead for good. Elliott smashed a two-run double, scoring both Bosch and
Cheyenne Wilcke, and came around to score on Beaver's two-out, RBI triple. Coach
Chris Nachtigall's squad added a run in the fifth after a single by Boger and a Lancers' error plated Tindall. Northwestern closed the scoring in the seventh after triple by Bosch, who then scored off another error on a ball hit by Wilcke.
Brooke Becker (1-7) took the loss for the Lancers, giving up two hits and three runs in three innings. Mount Marty totaled five hits, all singles by five different players.
Mount Marty accounted for nine hits and opened up a 7-0 lead to held on for a 9-5 win in game one. The Lancers scored three in the bottom of the second inning after Erin Boyle cleared the bases on with a 3-run single. Kelsey Mitera led of the third inning with a solo home run and Jennifer Mitera added a double and came around to score on a passed ball. Mount Marty scored two more runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings, chasing Northwestern starter
Kayla Tindall.Â
Tindall (13-5) gave up eight hits and seven earned runs in 4.1 innings while striking out three.
Samantha Ubben pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.Â
Wilcke led the Red Raiders' offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs, hitting her GPAC-leading 11th home run in the seventh inning. Tindall, Boger and Schnell all added one hit each.
Bianca Minor (8-6) earned the win, giving up four hits and three runs in four innings. Dani Lowe and Jaden Bly totaled two hits each for the Lancers.
