Women's Basketball Hosts Midland For Senior Day

Game Time...No.9 Northwestern College plays host to Midland in it's final home game of the regular season this weekend for Senior / Parent's Day.Tip-off at the Bultman Center is scheduled for 2pm. Northwestern is tied with Dakota Wesleyan for second place in the current GPAC standings with a 14-3 record, 19-6 overall. Midland is in sixth place in the updated GPAC standings at 9-9, 14-14 overall. 

Saturday's game also marks the final regular season home game for the Red Raiders' two seniors; Paige Danner and Renee Maneman. All of the player's parents will also be recognized.

All-Time...Northwestern has won nine of the last 10 match-ups and leads the all-time series against Midland 38-14, dating back to the 1977-78 season. The Red Raiders have won four straight in the rivalry, including a 92-61 road win in a match-up played Jan.6 in Fremont, Neb.

Last Time...Kassidy De Jong poured in a season-high 32 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in leading Northwestern to a 92-61 win against Midland on Jan. 6 in a match-up played on Jan. 6. Anna Kiel scored 20 points, going 9-for-12 from the field, and Darbi Gustafson recorded a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. 

A lay-up by Kiel finished off a back-and-forth first quarter that resulted in a 19-18 Midland lead. Northwestern opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run getting six points from De Jong and a three-pointer by Paige Danner, to take the lead for good, 27-19. Midland came back to get within three (27-24) moments later but Northwestern answered with an 11-2 surge, capped by a three-pointer from Bre Schuiteman and a lay-up by Kiel for a 38-26 advantage. The Red Raiders led 44-29 at the break.

Northwestern quickly built its lead up to 20+ points in the third quarter and went ahead by 30 midway into the final period after a basket by Gustafson.

The Red Raiders shot 51% from the field and held a commanding 54-33 edge on the boards, pulling down a season-high 20 offensive rebounds. Renee Maneman dished out nine assists and Haley Birks contributed a career-high five assists.

Midland shot 35% for the game and was led by Joelle Overkamp with 18 points and five rebounds. Amanda Hansen added 11 points and was the only other Warriors player in double figures.

With two games left in the regular season, Midland currently sits in sixth place in the GPAC with a 9-9 record, 14-14 overall. They are 2.5 games in back of Morningside and 1.5 games in front of Dordt, having split the two meetings against the Defenders this year. Midland has won three straight and four of its last five games heading into the weekend, earning wins over College of Saint Marty, Mount Marty and against then-No.1 Concordia, handing the Bulldogs its only loss.

Gilbert is in his fifth season as the Warriors head coach and to Midland after coaching stints at University of Nebraska Lincoln and Mount Mercy. Gilbert returns three starters and six players from 2016-17 team that finished tied with Mount Marty for eighth in the GPAC with a 7-13 record, 15-15 overall.

The Red Raiders are tied with Dakota Wesleyan for second place in the current GPAC standings at 14-3, two games in back of Concordia with three games left in the regular season. They are 19-6 overall with all six losses coming to teams ranked in the top 25. 

This year's seniors, Paige Danner and Renee Maneman, have been part of Red Raider teams that have a 45-34 record in the GPAC, 71-44 overall; one appearance in the NAIA Division II National Championship.
