Grant DeMeulenaere scored 13 points in the Red Raiders 92-72 road loss to No.4 Morningside this evening in Sioux City, Iowa. The loss drops Northwestern to 1-2 in the GPAC, 4-3 overall.
DeMeulenaere shot 6-for-8 from the field en route to a career-high 13 points, one of three Red Raiders to score in double figures.
Steven Kragt netted a career-high 12 points, draining three from beyond the arc, and
Jay Small was also in double figures with 10.
Northwestern shot 51% for the game, 46% (12/26) from the arc, and held a 34-27 edge on the glass. The Red Raiders, however, committed 21 turnovers compared to just five by the Mustangs.
The Red Raiders scored the first six points of the game on back-to-back three's by Kragt and opened up a 16-9 advantage just over five minutes in. After Morningside came back with a 7-0 run of their own to tie it, a Small three-pointer and basket by
Grant Rohrer put Coach Korver's squad back in front briefly, 21-16. The Mustangs, however, scored the next nine points to take the lead for good and opened up a 38-27 advantage at the break on a three-point by Pierce Almond.
Morningside scored eight of the first 10 points to extend its lead to 17 in the opening moments of the second half. The teams traded baskets over the next 8-10 minutes as the lead stayed from 16-19 points. With Northwestern down 17, Morningside went on an 8-2 run as both Almond and Alex Borchers hit consecutive three-pointers to go up by 20+ points during the final five minutes.
The Mustangs shot 53% for the game, 44% (14/32) from the three-point line. Zach Imig and Alex Borchers led a balanced Morningside offense with 13 points each. Brody Egger and Ben Hoskins both scored 11 and Matt Hahn chipped in nine.
Northwestern will head to LaCrosse, Wis. to play Viterbo on Tuesday night and will then head to Chicago, Ill. for two games over Thanksgiving break.
