Red Raiders Drop Road Game To Viterbo

Northwestern College lost its second straight road game, falling to Viterbo (Wis.) 84-75, in a non-conference match-up played tonight in LaCross, Wis. Northwestern is now 4-4 on the season; Viterbo improves to 5-3.

Jay Small led all scorers with a career-high 20 points, draining six three-pointers, also a career-best. Parker Mulder totaled 14 points and six boards and both Steven Kragt (13) and Trent Hilbrands (11) were also in double figures.

Northwestern fell behind 5-0 and trailed by as many as 10 (31-21) with 7:53 left in the first half. Mulder brought the Red Raiders back to within four, scoring on a drive in the lane and knocking down a three-pointer only to have Viterbo respond with a run to lead by nine at the break, 45-36.

The teams played even in the second half and Northwestern made it a one possession game four times during the final 20 minutes. Down 67-61, two free throws by Grant Rohrer followed by a three-pointer by Small cut the Red Raider deficit down to two (68-66) at the four-minute mark. A basket by Jason Tichy and three-point play by Jake Schroeckenthaler put the V-Hawks back in front by seven as the hosts pulled away during the final minutes.

Northwestern shot a season-low 35% for the game, 37% (16/43) from the arc, and held the edge on the boards, 40-36. Hilbrands contributed six assists and Kragt shared team-high honors with Mulder, pulling down six boards.

Schroeckenthaler led Viterbo with 19 points and eight rebounds, making 8-of-12 field goal attempts. Tichy added 16 and Jezzriah Burton dropped in 12 points. The V-Hawks shot 53% for the game, 24% (4/17) from the arc.

Northwestern heads to play in the Saint Xavier (Ill.) Classic over the Thanksgiving break, beginning on Friday against the host Cougars.
