Red Raiders Earn Point Against Briar Cliff

The Red Raiders earned a point with a draw Wednesday against Briar Cliff University 2-2.

Briar Cliff opened up the scoring on the night in the 14th minute when Martin DeLeon got into the box on a through ball and was able to hit a ball across the face of goal with the outside of his right foot onto the run of Vilmer Gimbringer. Gimbringer tapped home the finish past Matt Scott.

The Raiders would even the 26th minute when Tyler Limmer would scoop up a 50/50 ball between the Charger back line and midfield group and decided to take on both center backs. Limmer would cut to his right and cause one center back to slip and Limmer's hard shot would careen after hitting the defender's back and would go back post over the keeper's head.

The Red Raiders would take the lead in the 54th minute when the Raiders high pressed the BCU backline and would force a turnover in the attacking third. Briar Cliff would try to clear but the ball found its way to Tyler Limmer and he would beat his defender and hit a low shot that keeper Alex Theobold got a touch to but could not keep the ball out of the net.

Tyler Limmer took control of the school record for career goals with his brace on the night. He passed Patrick Dirkse who had 48 career goals. Limmer now sits at 49.

The Chargers would tie the game in the 81st minute after Briar Cliff got the ball to Prichard Sibanda who was able to get the ball to his left foot going at the Raider back line and was able to hit a shot over Matt Scott.

Northwestern had a great chance to win the game in the final minute when Morgan Newby hit a shot off the crossbar.

Briar Cliff had a wonderful chance in the closing moments after apparently earning a penalty kick but after conferring with his assistant referee, center Jos Masak decided to rescind the original call that would have almost spelled doom for the Raiders.

The overtime periods were high octane but neither team could find a quality chance to end the game in something other than a draw.

"On one hand you can say we didn't play well enough to win tonight," commented head coach Dan Swier. "On the other hand we had a 2-1 lead and a good chance to win it late when it was 2-2.  I'm proud of our guys for doing enough to keep us unbeaten in conference play.  Briar Cliff came to play tonight and we refused to be beaten."

The Raiders take on Midland University Saturday night at 7:15pm at the NWC Soccer Complex.
