The Red Raiders earned a point in their first
GPAC game of the year after holding high scoring Midland University to a 0-0 result. Northwestern faced a Midland team that was averaging 4.15 goals per game and were in the top 5 in scoring in the NAIA. The Raiders, led by Naomi
Schimmel in goal along with Sarah
Beaton,
Taelor Lamansky, Sabrina
Tarchione, and
Ashlee Speck, held the Warriors to 18 total shots but only 9 of them found the frame.
The physical game was mostly played in the midfield space as both teams were able to handle the other's attacks. The Raiders were able to force Midland into taking longer shots and Midland stifled the Red Raider attack before they could get shots off.
Some of the best chances of the game came in the overtime sessions. Midland was able to break through in the first overtime and forced Naomi
Schimmel to make a wonderful save diving to her left to parry the ball out for a corner. The Raiders then countered in the next minute and sprung
Cherish Henry in on goal 1v1 but Midland keeper Rachel
Thigpen came up big with a leg save.
The Raiders had the final chance of the game with 40 seconds left in the second overtime when Henry found
Jessi Carver in a 1v1 situation but
Thigpen came up big again for the Warriors making a point saving effort.
"We played very well tonight and we can walk away from a game against a top 25 team with a point," commented Head Coach Ben
Karnish. "We had chances to win which is also very encouraging. We held a high scoring team tonight and we can build off a result like this."
The Raiders head to
Doane University Tuesday at 5pm. The Raiders beat
Doane last
season1-0 in overtime.Â
