Northwestern College had its offense tamed at the hands of 10th-ranked Morningside in a GPAC doubleheader played this afternoon in Sioux City. The Red Raiders failed to score a run against the defending GPAC champions, losing 2-0 and 3-0, in games played at the Jensen Complex.
Northwestern drops to 7-5 in GPAC play, 18-17 overall while Morningside continues to pull away from the rest of the GPAC with an 8-2 league mark, 26-7 overall.
The Red Raiders accounted for a combined six hits on the afternoon, three in each game, as they could not solve Morningside senior Rachel Henks, who pitched back-to-back shutouts. Henks, who improved to 21-5 on the year, walked one and struck out 10 in game one and followed with a no walk, four strikeout performance in game two.
Base runners and scoring opportunities were hard to come by as Northwestern had a runner at third in the fifth inning of game one and a runner at second in the first and seventh innings. Henks and the Morningside defense did not allow a Northwestern runner to get to second base in game two.
Madison Beaver, Jensen Boger and Bri Petrauskas all had a double off Henks in game one. Jaclyn Smith, Cheyenne Wilcke and Katie Elliottt had singles in game two.
Morningside scored both of its runs in the third inning off NW game-one starter Kayla Tindall. Mara Armsberry hit a double and later scored after a two-out double by Tracey Edwards. Following a walk to Abby Conner, Rachel Koch hit an RBI double, scoring Edwards to give the Mustangs their final run.
Scoreless with one out in the bottom of the seventh of game two, Armsberry hit a walkoff three-run home run, scoring Moriah Bohlmann and McKenzie Anderson, who had reached base on a single and an error.
Both Red Raider pitchers, Tindall and Morgan Means, were outstanding despite being tagged with the loss in their respective games. The duo limited the highest scoring offense in the GPAC to just six hits in game one and only four hits in game two. Tindall, who dropped to 11-8 on the year, walked three and struck out five in six innings of game one. Means (7-9) totaled three strikeouts and walked three in 6.1 innings of game two.
