Red Raiders To Play In North Dakota This Weekend

Game Time...No.17 Northwestern College heads north to play a pair of  ranked teams from the North Star Athletic Conference (NSAA), No.9 University of Jamestown and (RV) Mayville State. The Red Raiders will play the Jimmies on Friday night at 6pm and will then square off against the Comets on Saturday, Nov. 4 at 2pm.

All-Time...Northwestern has won four straight and is 8-3 all-time against the University of Jamestown, dating back to the 2001-02 season. The Red Raiders are a perfect 5-0 all-time against Mayville State, dating back to the first ever match-up in 2004-05. 

Northwestern defeated the Jimmies 82-79 last year; earned an 82-62 win over the Comets last year; both games played in Orange City at the Bultman Center.

Jamestown owns a 2-1 record heading into the weekend, earning a pair of wins over the University of Manitoba but losing to 8th-ranked Dakota Wesleyan last time out, 87-69, at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D. The Jimmies, under the direction of head coach Greg Ulland, return two starters and five of their top eight players from a 2016-17 team that won their fourth straight regular season conference title, going 15-1 in NSAA play. They went on to win the postseason championship and earned their sixth consecutive trip to the NAIA D-II National Championship, losing to Concordia (Neb.) in the quarterfinals. Jamestown was picked to win the NSAA based on the coaches' preseason poll.

The Comets are a perfect 2-0 on the season, defeating Providence College back on Oct. 21 and Oct. 22 by the scores of 134-38 and 94-30. Coach Hutter returns all five starters from a 2016-17 team that finished tied with Bellevue for fourth place in the NSAA, 17-12 overall. Mayville State was picked to finish second in the NSAA preseason coaches' poll and has finished with a winning record in eight of the last 12 seasons.

Northwestern opened the 2017-18 season with a 70-60 home win over William Penn (Iowa), an NAIA Division I team from the Heart of America Athletic Conference, Tuesday night. Darbi Gustafson and Kassidy De Jong both poured in a game-high 22 points and the Red Raiders opened up a 28-6 advantage by the end of the first quarter. Gustafson pulled down 10 rebounds for the ninth double-double of her career.

Picked fourth in the GPAC Preseason coaches' poll, Northwestern is one of five conference teams ranked in the top 25, joining Concordia, Morningside, Dakota Wesleyan and Hastings. Yaw owns a 135-58 overall record in his six seasons as the Red Raiders head coach, including a 20-12 overall record last year. The Red Raiders finished fifth in the GPAC regular season at 10-10 and earned one of the final spots in the 32-team NAIA D-II Women's Basketball Championship. They defeated Southern Oregon in the first round but lost to top-seed Southeastern (Fla.) in the round of 16 to end the year. All five starters and the top eight scorers return from last year's team.
