The Red Raiders held the leading scorer in the nation to 1 shot as they shut out the Briar Cliff Chargers 2-0 on Saturday. The win propels the Raiders to the 2nd seed for the GPAC Conference Tournament starting Tuesday where they will host Doane University.
Northwestern was able to maintain much of the possession throughout the 90 minutes after breaking down the Briar Cliff high powered attack and primarily, Prichard Sibanda. The Red Raiders did a good job of cutting off dangerous passes to Briar Cliff's high powered attack and left the Chargers frustrated for 90 minutes.
The Raiders were able to get on the board in the 29th minute after they earned a penalty kick. Limmer, stepping up for his 4th penalty of the year, calmly put NWC in the lead. Northwestern, though controlling most of the match, could not generate another scoring chance until much later in the game,.
The second half started off well again for the Raiders defensively holding BCU in check and keeping their dangerous players on the ball in the midfield rather than Northwestern's final third. The one goal lead was standing strong for the Raiders but the final blow came in the 84th minute.
Breno Fabbri ws a benefactor to the work on the counter attack by
Cole Cruse and
Christopher Ten Pas. The Raiders were defending a free kick in their own half and the ball was won out of the back and found
Morgan Newby who played a wonderful long ball from the right side to the left to a streaking
Christopher Ten Pas. Ten Pas took two touches and played another great back across the face of goal to Fabbri who tapped in the pass after the keeper could not get to the cross.
The Raiders will host Doane University Tuesday at 7pm at the NWC Soccer Complex in their GPAC Tournament Quarterfinal matchup.
