The Red Raiders dominated in route to a 4-2 GPAC Quarterfinal win against Doane College Tuesday night. The snow flurry evening saw the Raiders come out and play very well defensively to start. They were able to eliminate any Doane possession with ease and found the ball off of good pressure in the attacking third often.
The 18th minute saw the Raiders capitalize on that pressure as
Cole Cruse found the ball off a bad touch by a Doane player and found
Tyler Limmer on a soft-touch through ball for a 1v1 opportunity in which Limmer burried for his 14th goal of the season. It was Cruse's 2nd assist on the season.
Northwestern was still able to get numbers behind the ball after gaining the lead and doubled their tally in the 31st minute. The Raiders had broken through the Tiger back line many times after their first goal but were able to find the net after
Anselmo Kim was played through and instead of taking a shot at a hard angle, he slotted the ball back accross the face of goal to
Alex Schussman who was wide open in front of goal. It was Schussman's 7th goal of the season and Kim's 5th assist.
The Red Raiders continued to be dangerous after Schussman's goal and kept the pressure on the Tigers. So much so that Schussman again benefited from the pressure the Raiders were putting on the Tigers.
Connor Tupper found the ball on the left side of the box in the 39th minute and hit a good cross to the backside of the goal where the ball one-hopped to Schussman who calmly placed his brace into the back of the net. It was Schussman's 8th of the year.Â
The Raiders held the 3-0 lead for the majority of the game until the 67th minute when a mistake in the NWC back line lead to Rhett Dawson being in 1 on 1 with
Matt Scott and passed the ball into the back of the net.Â
Morgan Newby was able to restore the 3 goal lead in the 79th minute off an assist from
Breno Fabbri. The goal was almost a mirror image of Schussman's 2nd goal. Fabbri was in on the left side of the frame in the attacking third and slotted the ball to get to four total goals on the night.
The Tigers scored a goal in the 87th off many failed clearances by the Red Raiders and Zackry Stevenson was able to make the Raiders pay.Â
The 4-2 win propels the Raiders to the next round of the GPACÂ Conference Tournament where they will host Concordia University on Saturday at 7pm.
