The Red Raiders inched closer to hosting a GPAC Tournament match and a GPAC Regular Season title after a emphatic 3-0 win over Morningside College Wednesday. The Raiders, who are 10-4-2 overall and 6-1-0 in the GPAC, are now in position to take the GPAC regular season crown for the first time since 2004 if they can take care of business the rest of the season.
The Raiders opened up the scoring early with a 5th minute goal from
Alex Schussman. The Raiders built up out of the back line and switched the ball to
Connor Tupper who went on an attacking dribble and although he did not get through, the ball bounced to
Tyler Limmer who anticipated the deflections the ball took and sprinted into the box and played a strong ball to Schussman in front of net where his first shot was blocked but was able to bash home the rebound from point blank range.
Northwestern was able to double their first half tally in the 36th minute when
Tyler Limmer was able to drive in the box and took on two defenders in the process. Limmer was being bullied the whole way and eventually was fouled in the box. Limmer was then able to convert the penalty kick for his team leading 12th goal of the season.
The Raiders added an insurance goal in the 57th minute with a goal that was a mirror image of the first goal for the Raiders.
Tyler Limmer was able to break through the Briar Cliff back line and was able to find a wide open
Alex Schussman for an easy finish and a brace on the day for Schussman. The goal was Schussman's 6th of the year and Limmer's 5th assist on the year.
Matt Scott and his back line earned the shutout on the night after making 6 saves on the night and coming up big in a few situations for the Raiders,
The next challenge for the Raiders comes Saturday when they host #8 ranked Hastings College at 7:15pm at the NWC Soccer Complex.
