Northwestern falls in opener, 2-1, against No. 17 Bellevue
Northwestern College played their season opener at No. 17 Bellevue University. The 2016 season starts with a loss by a 2-1 score against Bellevue on Monday evening at Bellevue Soccer Club.
Northwestern's Daniel Zapata got the season started on the right track scoring in the second minute. The Red Raiders played a long ball from the back up the wing to Connor Sams who sent a cross into the box to Alex Schussman .Schussman took a touch before passing to Zapata who hit a one-timer into the back of the net.
Scott Robson had an answer for Bellevue with his first goal of the season in the 18th minute.
Bellevue and Northwestern entered halftime tied at 1-1. Bellevue had out-shot Northwestern at half 7-2 margin.
Bellevue took the lead with Andres Blanco goal in the 60th minute. This gave Bellevue a 2-1 advantage.
Northwestern had one final chance in the final minute when Bellevue keeper Martin came off his line to stop Zapata on a breakaway attempt.
Bellevue out-shot Northwestern 13-6 (7-2 on goal) and gained four corner kicks to the Red Raiders' two. NWC was whistled for 10 fouls and Bellevue was called for nine.
The Bruins improved to 1-0-1 with the win while the loss caused Northwestern to open their season at 0-1-0.
Northwestern men's soccer team is off until Saturday, Aug. 27 when they host MidAmerican Nazarene at 3 p.m.
