Box Score Northwestern College had its three-game win streak snapped, falling to No.14 Hastings 80-67 in a GPAC match-up played tonight at the Bultman Center.
The Red Raiders drop to 3-4 in conference play, 9-4 overall, while Hastings improves to 5-1 in the GPAC, 11-2 overall.Â
Haley Birks netted a team-high 19 points to go with seven rebounds and teammate Darbi Gustafson chipped in 12 points and nine boards despite battling foul trouble for most of the game. Chanda Zomermaand (11) and Renee Maneman (10) were also in double figures.Â
How It Happened...
Hastings opened the game with an 11-4 run only to have Northwestern score the next eight points to take a 12-11 advantage after a three-pointer by Birks and a jumper by Maneman.
The Broncos closed the first quarter with an 8-2 run and led 19-14 after the opening 10 minutes
A jumper by Zomermaand made it a one-point game (21-20) and later, two free throws by the freshman tied the game at 26 with 1:53 left in the first half.Â
Hastings scored the next six points and closed the period with an 8-4 run for a 34-30 halftime lead
Northwestern tied the game at two different points of the third quarter (36-36, 40-40) but was unable to take the lead. With Hastings up one (45-44), the Broncos outscored the hosts 9-1 to take a 54-45 advantage. They led by eight at quarters end.
A three-point play by Gustafson put Northwestern down by just one possession (61-58) and they still trailed by three (70-67) after a free throw by Birks at the 3:10 mark.Â
Forced to foul, Hastings converted all eight of its free throws down the stretch to clinch it and earn the road win.
