Chanda Zomermaand poured in a career-high 23 points as Northwestern College rolled to a 94-61 win over No.15 Friends University this afternoon at the Dordt Classic.

The Red Raiders improve to 10-5 on the year and ended the Falcons 11-game win streak. Friends drops to 11-3 on the season.

One of five Northwestern players in double figures, Zomermaand drained a career-best seven three-pointers en route to a 23-point effort, surpassing her previous high of 22 points against Waldorf. Darbi Gustafson poured in 19 points, going 9-for-10 from the field, while Haley Birks chipped in 14 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Paige Danner (13) and Renee Maneman (10) were also in double figures while Anna Kiel contributed seven points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.

How It Happened...

Trailing 4-2, Northwestern used a 10-0 run, capped by back-to-back three-pointers by Zomermaand and Gustafson, to take a 12-4 lead. Friends rallied behind the play of All-American Shann Sellers, who drained a pair of three-pointers to get the Falcons within one, 15-14. The Red Raiders pushed the lead back to five, 22-17, by the end of the quarter.

Northwestern extended its lead to nine (33-24) after a jumper by Maneman at the 5:25 mark of the second half. Friends, however, closed the half with a 13-0 run, holding the Red Raiders scoreless for the final five minutes to take a 37-33 advantage at the break.

The Red Raiders scored the first seven points of the second half on baskets by Danner, Birks and a three-pointer by Zomermaand. With Northwestern up three (48-45), Northwestern outscored Friends 14-0 over the final 4:45 of the third quarter, led by Zomermaand with eight points during the decisive run. Defensively, the Red Raiders forced Friends into five turnovers and 0-6 from the field during the final five minutes of the third quarter. 

Northwestern continued its run at the start of the fourth quarter with a basket and two free throws by Danner followed by a jumper by Maneman to take a 68-45 lead. Holding a 21-point lead (69-48) moments later, Northwestern put the game away with a 18-4 run and stretched its lead to 35 points at the 3:28 mark. In total, the Red Raiders limited Friends to just three field goals over a 10-minute stretch to gain control in the second half.
