Box Score Northwestern College remains unbeaten with an 82-79 win over No. 12 University of Jamestown (N.D.) in the Red Raiders home opener played tonight at the Bultman Center. Northwestern improves to 3-0 on the year while the Jimmies drop to 1-2 on they year.
Five Northwestern players scored in double figures, led by Haley Birks with 18. Renee Maneman matched her career-high with 17 while Paige Danner, Kassidy De Jong and Darbi Gustafson added 13 points each.Â
How It Happened...
Jamestown stormed out to a 14-0 lead just three minutes into the game as all five starters scored at least one basket. Following the Red Raiders second timeout, the hosts answered with a run of their own, outscoring Jamestown 17-2 to take a 17-16 lead. Birks (6) and De Jong (5) keyed the Red Raiders comeback. The game was tied at 20 by the end of the first quarter.
Northwestern went ahead by as much as five at three different times in a high-scoring second quarter. With the Red Raiders leading by four (41-37), Jamestown closed with a 7-2 run, finished off with a jumper by Kyra Dewald, to take a 44-43 lead into halftime.
Consecutive baskets by Jamestown put the visitors in front 49-43 in the opening moments of the third quarter. Northwestern, however, scored the next 10 points and grabbed the lead back, 53-49, after a jumper by Paige Danner. The Red Raiders stretched their lead to 10 (69-59) by the end of the quarter, scoring the final four points of the period and holding the Jimmies scoreless for nearly three minutes.
Jamestown guard McKayla Orr knocked down a three-pointer at the beginning of the fourth quarter to spark a 10-0 run as the Jimmies tied the game at 69 with six minutes left. Not to be outdone, Northwestern went on a decisive 11-2 run over the next three minutes to put the game away. Five different Red Raiders scored during the final surge.Â
