Red Raiders Down Waldorf, 81-42

Northwestern College dominated play from start to finish in earning an 81-42 win over Waldorf University this evening at the Northwestern Classic, sponsored by the Van Englenhoven Agency and P's PIzza. The Red Raiders improved its record to 5-1 while the Warriors fall to 0-6 on the year.

Freshman Chanda Zomermaand led the Northwestern effort with a career-best 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting, going 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Haley Birks poured in 17 points and Kassidy De Jong was one rebound shy of her second double-double of the season with 13 points and nine boards.

How It Happened...

Northwestern used a 12-0 run early in the first quarter to pull away from Waldorf right out of the gate. The Red Raiders held the visitors scoreless for nearly five minutes, forcing five turnovers over that span. Northwestern extended its lead to 23-7 by the end of the first quarter.

Another 6-0 run at the start of the second period pushed the lead to 22 and the Red Raider defense continued to clamp down on the Warriors, limiting Waldorf to 18% from the field and 10 points in the quarter. Northwestern led 44-17 at halftime.

Northwestern put the game away in the third, outscoring Waldorf 28-9 as they opened up its largest lead (46) 72-26. 

By the Numbers...

Northwestern shot 43% for the game and held a commanding edge, 55-40, on the glass

Renee Maneman was the fourth Red Raider who scored in double figures, adding 10 points to go with a game-high nine assists; she moved past both Karen (Hutson) Ettleman and Alli (Dunkelberger) Engebretson and into 18th place all-time with 315 career assists

De Jong went 1-for-2 from beyond the arc, making the 50th three-pointer for her career

The Red Raiders committed 13 turnovers and forced Waldorf into 22 miscues

Waldorf shot 29% from the field, 14% (3-for-22) from beyond the arc

Samantha Birkes led the Warriors with 10 points
