ORANGE CITY, Iowa — Northwestern defeated Mount Mercy 2-1 on Saturday at NWC Soccer Complex. The Red Raiders scored both goals in the first half and held the Mustangs to one shot after halftime.
Aliza Edwards put the Raiders in front early, scoring at 1:29 for a 1-0 lead. The Mustangs answered at 6:09 when Addie Lange converted a penalty kick to tie the match at 1-1, and Ella Top made saves on Hazel Koenighain and Lange as the visitors continued to create chances. The Raiders took the lead back in the 26th minute when an own goal put Northwestern in front 2-1, and the Raiders carried the lead to halftime after later attempts from Edwards and Regnerus.
The Red Raiders created the first recorded chance of the second half when Regnerus shot wide right at 48:44, followed by a Cole corner kick at 48:51. With the Raiders ahead 2-1 later in the half, Lydia Timm had a shot saved by Manuela Gutierrez at 69:37, the Mustangs' Addie Lange missed wide at 70:33 and Timm added a blocked attempt at 72:20. Kira Roberts sent another Raiders shot wide right at 78:18, and Edwards had a late attempt saved at 89:47 as the scoreless half closed out the Raiders' 2-1 win.
