Raiders Keep Winning Streak Alive with Two Sweeps to Start the Weekend

OMAHA, Neb. — Northwestern swept two matches on the first day of the CSM Labor Day Classic against Ottawa University (Ks) and Lindsey Wilson College (Ky).

Match 1 - Northwestern defeated Ottawa 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-15) on Friday. The Raiders hit .381 with 47 kills and held the Braves to a .152 hitting percentage with 30 kills.

The Raiders opened the first set with a Stella Winterfeld kill from Nyah Potthoff, a Kira Cherry attack error and a Sidney Oostra ace for a 3-0 lead, but the Braves used kills by Bailee Nickel and Ciara Gray to tie it at 3-3. Winterfeld helped the Red Raiders stay in front with multiple early kills, and the hosts turned a 9-7 edge into a 13-7 lead behind a Braves attack error, a block by Maddy Sampson and Winterfeld, another Braves error and a Potthoff kill. After the Braves got back within 13-9, the Raiders pushed the margin to 19-11 with points that included a Winterfeld kill, an Aubrey De Groot block and a Winterfeld ace. The Red Raiders finished the set by moving from 20-14 to set point on kills by Aubree Shields, Sampson, Shields again and Potthoff, then closed the 25-15 win on Sampson's kill from Potthoff.

The Raiders moved ahead 6-3 in the second set behind three Winterfeld kills and a Sampson-Potthoff block. A sideout kill by Winterfeld began a six-point run, and she served the next five points as the Red Raiders stretched the score to 12-3 with a service ace and blocks involving Aubrey De Groot, Halie Kapelke and Shields. The lead reached 20-11 on Potthoff's kill from Oostra, but the Braves answered with five straight points, including a service ace, to close the gap to 20-16. Winterfeld ended that stretch with a kill from Potthoff, and after the Braves pulled within 23-20 and 24-21, Winterfeld finished the set with another Potthoff-assisted kill for a 25-21 Raiders win.

After the Braves scored the first two points of the third set, the Raiders pulled even at 2-2 and later used a four-point serving stretch by Potthoff to move ahead 7-3, with Winterfeld putting down two kills and Kapelke adding another in that run. The Red Raiders kept building through the middle of the set, reaching 15-8 after kills by Sampson and three straight finishes from Winterfeld. The Braves cut into the margin with points from Ciara Gray, Carson Schuman and Bailee Nickel, but the Raiders answered to get to 21-15 on a Potthoff kill from Winterfeld. Anni Wedgbury served the final four points, including two aces and a Shields kill from Oostra, as the Red Raiders closed the set 25-15.

Match 2 — Northwestern swept Lindsey Wilson 3-0 on Friday, winning 25-16, 25-14, 25-18. The Red Raiders held the Blue Raiders to a -.118 hitting percentage and finished with an 11.0-6.0 edge in total blocks.

The Red Raiders moved in front during a back-and-forth start, breaking a 3-3 tie with two straight points and later going up 8-5 on Aubree Shields' kill from Nyah Potthoff. With Anni Wedgbury serving, the Red Raiders scored five straight points to stretch the lead to 13-5, using Wedgbury ace, a Maddy Sampson kill and Lindsey errors during the run. After the Blue Raiders got within 13-7, the Red Raiders pushed the margin back out to 18-7 behind Madi Nemmers' service turn, including a Potthoff and Sampson block and a Potthoff kill from Sidney Oostra. Lindsey cut the gap to 21-14 and later 22-16, but Aubrey De Groot's kill, Sampson's block and a final Blue Raiders attack error closed the set for the Red Raiders, 25-16.

After Lindsey built a 3-1 lead, the Red Raiders scored five straight points to move in front 6-3, getting blocks from Aubrey De Groot with Stella Winterfeld and Halie Kapelke before Winterfeld finished the run with a kill from Potthoff. The Red Raiders pushed the margin to 10-4 on consecutive Blue Raiders attack errors, including a block by De Groot and Kapelke, before Lindsey cut it to 10-6. A Kapelke kill started another Red Raiders stretch that carried the lead to 14-6, and later the Raiders moved from 14-8 to 18-8 with Wedgbury serving through three straight Blue Raiders attack errors. Winterfeld helped close the set with kills for 20-11, 21-11 and the final point, while Oostra added an ace as the Red Raiders took the set 25-14.

After Lindsey tied the third set at 3-3 on Hana Kisa's ace, the Red Raiders moved back in front with a Winterfeld kill and two Blue Raiders attack errors, then pushed the lead to 10-4 after a Kapelke kill and another attack error. Lindsey narrowed the gap to 17-15 with three straight points, including back-to-back blocks, but Winterfeld answered with a kill before Sampson added one and Wedgbury served an ace for a 20-16 lead. After the Blue Raiders pulled within 22-18, Sampson's kill put the Red Raiders up 23-18, and two Lindsey attack errors finished a 25-18 set win.
