Raiders Rally to Beat Dordt in Rivalry Matchup

Orange City, Iowa — Northwestern defeated Dordt (IA) 3-1 on Wednesday, rallying after the opening set for a 21-25, 25-18, 25-13, 25-15 conference win. The Red Raiders hit .325 with 50 kills while holding the Defenders to a .136 attack percentage.
 
The Defenders scored the first three points and later moved ahead 7-3 before the Red Raiders put together a six-point run. Stella Winterfeld had a kill during that stretch. Aubrey De Groot and Jadyn Hofmeyer added kills off Nyah Potthoff assists, and the Raiders moved in front 9-7. The Defenders came back to lead 10-9, and the set stayed tight through ties at 12-12, 14-14, 16-16 and 17-17 before the Defenders pushed ahead 22-19. Hofmeyer had two late kills to keep the Red Raiders within reach, but the Defenders reached set point at 24-21 and finished the set 25-21.
 
The second set stayed level through 5-5, with Winterfeld opening the Red Raiders' scoring and Hofmeyer adding a kill while the Defenders answered with swings from Haley Kuperus and Laney Wolfswinkel. The Raiders then won seven of the next eight rallies to move in front 12-6, using blocks involving Aubrey De Groot, Maddy Sampson and Hofmeyer, three Winterfeld kills and a Defenders attack error before the visitors took a timeout. The Defenders cut the gap to 13-10 on Scarlett Winterfeld's ace and a Kuperus kill, but the Red Raiders stretched it back to 18-12 on a Winterfeld kill and Maggie Bloom's ace. The Raiders later moved ahead 23-15 with a Winterfeld block and a De Groot-Potthoff block, and Winterfeld supplied the final two Red Raider points on kills to close the set 25-18.
 
The Red Raiders moved ahead 8-1 by winning seven of the first eight rallies, with Sidney Oostra serving through a five-point stretch that included her ace, a Potthoff kill, a block by Aubrey De Groot and Potthoff, and a De Groot kill from Potthoff. The Defenders scored three straight points to get to 8-4, but the Raiders answered with the next five, getting service aces from Potthoff and Madi Nemmers and kills from Tierney Huss and Winterfeld for a 13-4 lead. After the Defenders reached 13-5 and later 14-6, the Red Raiders pushed the margin to 18-6 behind a Hofmeyer kill, a Bloom ace and two Defenders attack errors. Sampson, Winterfeld and Halie Kapelke added kills late, and Potthoff closed the set with a kill for a 25-13 Red Raiders win.
 
After the Defenders led 2-1, Potthoff's kill and a Defenders bad set put the Red Raiders in front, and kills by Hofmeyer and Kapelke helped the Red Raiders move ahead 6-3. The Defenders pulled within 8-6, but Anni Wedgbury's serving stretch carried the Raiders through the next major run. This run included two service aces, two Hofmeyer kills and a Sampson-Potthoff block helping push the set to 13-7. The Red Raiders added another stretch on Oostra's serve, scoring four straight points on Defenders attack errors, including a block credited to Potthoff. The Defenders put together four consecutive kills late, but the Raiders answered with a Winterfeld kill, a Bloom ace, a Defenders attack error and a Hofmeyer kill from Potthoff to close the set and the match, 25-15.
