Raiders Strong Defense Leads to a Sweep

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — Northwestern won 3-0 at Briar Cliff (IA) on Wednesday, taking the sets 25-16, 25-13, 25-19. The Red Raiders hit .301 with 39 kills while limiting the Chargers to a .023 hitting percentage and 20 kills.

The Red Raiders built an early 9-2 lead in the first set behind kills from Stella Winterfeld and Halie Kapelke, a block by Aubrey De Groot and Winterfeld, and several Chargers errors. The Chargers cut into the margin with three straight points to make it 9-5, then later used an Ayla Richardson ace and an Alexis Even kill to get within 16-13. The Raiders held off that push, moving from a 17-14 lead to 24-15 as Winterfeld, Kapelke and Nyah Potthoff recorded kills and Aubree Shields and Maddy Sampson combined on a block. After the Chargers fought off set point once, Kapelke finished the set with a kill from Potthoff for a 25-16 Red Raiders win.

The second set stayed within two points until the Chargers moved in front 8-6 on a Red Raiders attack error, but the Raiders answered with four straight points, including a Shields kill from Potthoff, to go ahead 10-8. After the Chargers got within 12-10, the Red Raiders put together a 6-0 run, with Potthoff scoring a kill, Aubrey De Groot and Winterfeld combining on a block, Winterfeld adding three kills and Sidney Oostra serving an ace for an 18-10 lead. The Chargers stopped that stretch with a kill, but the Raiders took the next four points to reach 22-11, getting a Jadyn Hofmeyer kill from Potthoff and a Potthoff service ace. Hofmeyer and Makenna Lilly added late kills, and Maggie Bloom served the closing ace as the Red Raiders finished the set 25-13.

The Red Raiders turned a 3-2 edge into a 6-2 lead in the third set while Winterfeld served, getting two kills from Kapelke and one from Hofmeyer. The Chargers later cut the margin to 15-12 on consecutive Raiders attack errors, but Winterfeld answered with a kill and the Red Raiders moved ahead 18-13 before a Chargers block made it 18-14. Bella Sysa put down a kill for 19-14, and Bloom followed with three service aces around a Brooklyn Voss attack error to carry the Raiders to 23-14; after the Chargers got back to 24-19, Shields closed the set with a kill for a 25-19 finish.
