Northwestern Falls Short Against Midland

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Red Raiders capped a 14-play, 79-yard fourth-quarter drive with a touchdown to move within 21-16, but the push was not enough as Midland defeated Northwestern 28-16.
 
The Raiders' defense kept the Warriors off the scoreboard in the first quarter despite an opening possession that reached the Red Raiders 44 and a later short-field drive that began at the Raiders 29. On the Warriors' first drive, Hayden Groos broke up a third-down pass at the Red Raiders 44, leading to a punt, and the Raiders' first snap from scrimmage was Josiah Heinz's 12-yard run before the drive stalled. After Tyson Money's 27-yard punt return put the Warriors in scoring position, Dylan Schillinger hurried the quarterback on an incompletion and Kylar Fritz and Lane Kenny stopped Brady Singer for a loss on 4th-and-2 just outside the red zone. The Raiders' final possession advanced into Midland territory after a pass interference penalty, but it ended with Jack Sadusky's 44-yard punt for a touchback, and the Warriors reached their 38 before the quarter finished without a score.
 
Northwestern put together the first scoring drive of the game, moving 85 yards from their own 11 before Gianna Bennett made a 22-yard field goal with 6:51 left. Colby Duncan helped sustain the march with a 22-yard completion to Caleb Moore, a 10-yard run on third down and completions of 16 yards to Bajema and 24 yards to Austyn Gerard. The Warriors answered with an 85-yard touchdown drive to move in front, but the Raiders' defense kept the margin there when Groos intercepted a pass at the goal line and returned it 35 yards with less than a minute remaining. The Raiders reached the 31 in the final minute behind completions to Gerard, Solomon Tea and Carson Ness, but the drive ended on a fourth-down sack, and the Warriors took a 7-3 lead into halftime.
 
The Red Raiders struck first in the third quarter, driving 57 yards after Heinz's 27-yard kickoff return and finishing with Duncan's 39-yard touchdown pass to Gerard on 4th-and-4 at 10:37. Bennett's extra point put the Raiders ahead 10-7, but the Warriors answered with a 75-yard touchdown drive and moved in front 14-10. The Red Raiders came back with a ground-heavy possession that included Heinz runs of nine and 11 yards and reached the Warriors 40 before a 4th-and-2 stop ended the drive. Barret Bleeker later sacked Brodey Johnson for a four-yard loss, but the Warriors converted on 3rd-and-12 and had advanced into Raider territory before the final frame commenced.
 
After the Warriors scored early in the fourth, the Northwestern answered with a 14-play, 79-yard drive that included a 4th-and-6 completion from Duncan to Ness and ended with Duncan's 13-yard touchdown pass to Gerard at 6:23, making it 21-16 after the two-point conversion failed. The Warriors then responded with a 54-yard touchdown pass at 2:19 to push the score to 28-16. The Red Raiders' final possession covered 70 yards in 14 plays, highlighted by completions to Ness, Lane Maassen and Gerard, but the drive ended on downs in the red zone to seal the win for Midland.
