Raiders Bounce Back with Road Win

HASTINGS, Neb. – No. 22 Northwestern returned to the win column with a 33-26 win over Hastings on Saturday.
 
The Red Raiders scored on all three of their first-quarter possessions while forcing punts on the Broncos' first three drives. Owen Lalumendre helped stop the opening series with a tackle for loss, and Caleb Moore's 29-yard punt return gave the Raiders a short field that ended with Gianna Bennett's 30-yard field goal at 9:45. The Red Raiders answered their next defensive stop with an 80-yard drive, including Duncan completions of 16 yards to Carson Ness and 30 yards to Austyn Gerard before Duncan found Gerard for a 21-yard touchdown at 2:44. After the Broncos went three-and-out again, Duncan connected with Moore for a 53-yard score with 18 seconds left, and the Raiders finished the first quarter ahead 16-0.
 
Northwestern turned field position into points in the second quarter, using Moore's 44-yard punt return and a 10-play drive to set up Bennett's 23-yard field goal for a 19-0 lead. The drive included third-down completions from Duncan to Gerard and Moore, and Duncan later ran for seven yards after an illegal formation penalty pushed the Raiders into 3rd-and-11. The Broncos answered with a 65-yard drive, converting 4th-and-3 at the Raiders' 23 before scoring on a two-yard touchdown pass after the two-minute timeout. The Raiders responded with a quick 79-yard march from their own 21, highlighted by completions to Moore, Gerard and Ness, but Moore's 40-yard catch ended with a fumble recovered by the Broncos at the goal line for a touchback.
 
The third quarter with a 10-play, 67-yard drive for the Raiders, with Duncan completing passes to Lane Maassen, Ness and Tyson Bajema before finding Moore for a five-yard touchdown that made it 26-7. The Broncos answered with a field goal, but the Raiders' defense limited the possession after Ayden Klein made a tackle for loss and Jordan Carter and Sam Klaassen broke up passes. After the Red Raiders went three-and-out, the Broncos scored on a 65-yard rush to move the score to 26-17. The Raiders responded by driving from their own 34 to the Broncos' two-yard line, highlighted by Duncan's 27-yard completion to Ahman Langton and an 11-yard throw to Gerard, and the third quarter ended with the Red Raiders still leading 26-17.
 
The Red Raiders secured the win by stopping the Broncos on downs in the final two minutes and then using a short-field possession to run out the clock. Earlier, Duncan opened the fourth frame with a two-yard touchdown pass to Ness, and Bennett's extra point put the Raiders ahead 33-17. The Broncos answered with a 31-yard field goal, then turned an interception into a 36-yard touchdown pass to make it 33-26 after the missed extra point. The Raiders' next drive reached the Broncos' 36 before a fourth-down incompletion, but Hayden Groos broke up a third-down pass on the Broncos' final series and Brodie Van Regenmorter made the tackle on a 4th-and-8 completion that came up short, allowing the Raiders to run out the clock.
