Relentless Raider Attack Stifles the Mustangs

Relentless Raider Attack Stifles the Mustangs

Orange City, Iowa — Northwestern defeated Morningside 3-0 on Wednesday at the Bultman Center. The Raiders moved from an 18-19 deficit to a 23-20 lead in the third set and finished the sweep with a 25-23 set win.

The Red Raiders trailed 7-6 in the first set before Maddy Sampson tied it with a kill and an attack error by the Mustangs put the Raiders in front 8-7, and after the Mustangs tied it at 8-8, the Raiders scored five straight behind kills by Aubree Shields, Sampson and Stella Winterfeld to lead 13-8. The Mustangs worked back to 16-16 on kills by Liv Odvody and Miyah Whitehead, but Halie Kapelke answered with a kill and two attack errors by the Mustangs moved the Raiders ahead 19-16. The Mustangs later tied the set at 21-21 on Victoria Bouska's kill, before Winterfeld put down three of the Raiders' final four points and an Odvody attack error finished the set at 25-22.

After Sampson tied the set at 1-1, the Red Raiders won seven of the next eight rallies to move ahead 9-2, with Winterfeld recording three kills in the stretch and Nyah Potthoff adding a service ace. The Mustangs put together three straight points to get within 10-6, but the Raiders answered with kills from Winterfeld, Sampson and back-to-back swings by Shields to build a 14-7 lead. The Raiders kept the margin from narrowing much the rest of the set, using a block by Aubrey De Groot and Winterfeld for an 18-10 lead and a Kapelke kill for 20-12. Shields and Sampson combined on a block before an attack error by the Mustangs made it 23-14, and the Raiders finished the set at 25-17.

The third set stayed tight early, with the Raiders getting kills from Sampson, Aubrey De Groot, Winterfeld and Kapelke before the Mustangs moved ahead 12-10. The Raiders came back to tie it at 14-14 on Maggie Bloom's service ace, but the Mustangs later led 19-18 after a kill by Victoria Bouska. Winterfeld tied the set at 19-19, Aubrey De Groot and Kapelke combined on a block for a 20-19 lead, and the Red Raiders pushed the margin to 23-20 on kills by Kapelke and Shields around a Mustangs timeout. The Mustangs pulled within 24-23, but Shields finished the set with a kill from Potthoff to give the Raiders a 25-23 win.
