Raiders End California Trip with Saturday Split

FULLERTON, Calif. – Northwestern opened Saturday's action with a sweep of No. 22 Southern Oregon before falling in four sets to No. 2 Eastern Oregon.

MATCH 1: NWC 3, SOU 0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-20)
How It Happened
Northwestern secured a sweep over No. 22 Southern Oregon on Saturday morning at Darling Pavilion, winning with set scores of 25-22, 25-21, and 25-20. The Red Raiders recorded a .344 hitting percentage, highlighted by 46 kills throughout the match.
 
The first set began with Northwestern establishing momentum early as Maddy Sampson scored off an assist from Nyah Potthoff. The teams exchanged points closely until a service ace by Potthoff gave the Raiders a 4-2 advantage. As the set progressed, SOU managed to briefly take the lead at 15-14, but the Red Raiders quickly countered. A pivotal moment came when Northwestern went on a 5-0 run, including a service ace by Sidney Oostra, bringing the score to 21-17 in Northwestern's favor. Southern Oregon attempted to rally back, closing the gap to 23-22, but the Raiders secured the set with a final block by Aubrey De Groot and Halie Kapelke, ending the set 25-22.
 
SOU opened the second set with back-to-back service aces by Annie Hite to take an early 2-0 lead. Northwestern responded with a kill from Sampson and a service ace by Maggie Bloom to level the score at 2-2. As the set progressed, the Red Raiders capitalized on Southern Oregon's service and attack errors to create a gap, with Sidney Oostra contributing a kill and service ace to push Northwestern ahead. SOU called a timeout at 12-10, but Northwestern extended its lead to 20-14 with a series of kills from Kapelke and Stella Winterfeld. Southern Oregon attempted a late comeback, narrowing the deficit to 24-21, but a decisive kill by Winterfeld, assisted by Potthoff, secured the 25-21 victory for Northwestern in the set.
 
Northwestern secured the sweep with a 25-20 victory in the third set, highlighted by a strong showing from Oostra and Winterfeld. The set began with Oostra's service ace, putting Northwestern on the board first. Despite a series of back-and-forth exchanges, the Red Raiders pulled ahead with a key sequence, including back-to-back kills from Sampson and another from Oostra. Southern Oregon struggled to maintain momentum, committing several attack errors. The decisive point came as De Groot delivered the final kill, sealing the win for Northwestern.

How It Happened
In a matchup between the two top-ranked teams in the NAIA, No. 2 Eastern Oregon emerged victorious over the No. 1 Raiders in Saturday's finale.
 
Northwestern started the first set with a strong offensive display, jumping to a 3-0 lead with kills from Stella Winterfeld and Anni Wedgbury, both assisted by Nyah Potthoff. EOU responded with a series of scoring offense, including two consecutive kills from Keira Vaughn, leveling the score at 6-6. EOU's aggressive serving, highlighted by Ava Semprimoznik's three aces, pushed them ahead 9-6. Despite efforts from the Raiders, including a kill by Maddy Sampson, EOU maintained momentum. Brooklyn Willard and Jule Whitley contributed key points, and Whitley's final kill from Kate Stidham sealed the set 25-14 for EOU.
 
The Mountaineers secured a 25-19 win in the second set against the Red Raiders. Brooke Womack and Jule Whitley contributed significantly to the scoring with kills, while service errors from both teams kept the scoreline tight early on. Northwestern managed to tie the score at 12-12 with a kill by Winterfeld and a service ace, but Eastern Oregon pulled away with a strong finish, including a kill by Womack to close out the set. A timeout by the Red Raiders at 18-16 attempted to shift momentum, but EOU maintained their lead, leveraging attack errors by Northwestern to seal the set.
 
In the third set, the Raiders capitalized on a strong offensive performance stay alive and defeat the Mountaineers 25-19. Winterfeld led Northwestern's attack with multiple kills, including a pivotal sequence where she scored three consecutive points, propelling her team to a 6-4 lead. Potthoff contributed by setting up her teammates, such as during a crucial assist to Sampson for a late-set point. EOU attempted a comeback, narrowing the gap to 20-16 with service aces by Madison Vaughn, but the Raiders maintained their lead. Jadyn Hofmeyer secured the final point with a kill, assisted by Potthoff, to close the set.
 
EOU took control early in the fourth set with an aggressive start, capitalizing on multiple attack errors by Northwestern's Winterfeld. The visiting team surged to a 3-0 lead, aided by a block from Mylie Mills and Akylah Kaino. Despite a kill from Sampson, the Mountaineers extended their lead to 7-2, prompting a timeout from the Raiders. Vaughn and Kaino led Eastern Oregon's offense, contributing multiple kills as the team widened the gap. The Red Raiders struggled to recover, and a kill by Mills, assisted by Stidham, concluded the set with a 25-10 victory for EOU.
