Red Raiders Fall in 14-Inning Thriller

CRETE, Neb. – Northwestern fell to Briar Cliff in a 5–3 defeat after 14 innings at Doane Ballfield Complex on Wednesday. The Red Raiders managed a home run among their nine hits but were stopped by Briar Cliff's walk-off two-run homer in the 14th.

How It Happened
The 0-0 score broke when Brody Ayers put the Red Raiders on the board in the second inning with a solo home run down the left field line, giving the Raiders a 1–0 lead through two innings.
 
In the fourth inning, BCU tied the game at 1–1. Damon Schmid scored on a double play after reaching on a single, which allowed Briar Cliff to even the score.
 
The fifth inning saw both teams scoring a run each. In the top half, Devin Dirkx singled to bring home Bryce Click, who had advanced to third on a wild pitch. Briar Cliff answered to tie it again in the bottom half, tying it again at 2-2.
 
The Raiders regained the lead in the seventh. Tyler Schroeder reached second on a throwing error and advanced to third on a sacrifice. He then scored on Ranier Castillo's sacrifice fly, making it 3–2. The Chargers responded in the bottom of the inning to level the score again at 3–3 through seven innings.
 
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 14th inning when Briar Cliff broke through. Grant Devecsery hit a two-run homer to left center, sealing the 5–3 victory for BCU.
 
Game Notes:
  • Brody Ayers threw a season-high 5.1 innings, striking out four batters.
  • At the plate, Ayers scored once and drove in a run.
  • TJ Silliman picked up a hit and a stolen base.
  • Devin Dirkx collected two hits and an RBI.
Up Next: The Raiders will face the loser of Doane vs. Hastings tomorrow at noon.
