Raiders Fall to No. 16 Doane in Thursday’s Doubleheader

CRETE, Neb. – Northwestern faced off against No. 16 Doane in a doubleheader on Thursday, resulting in a tough loss in game one with a final score of 15–8, followed by a close 6–4 defeat in game two.

How It Happened
Northwestern fell to Doane in game one with a final score of 15–8 on Thursday. The Red Raiders hit three home runs during the game, but a second-inning surge from the Tigers proved decisive.

Nikolai Wede homered to right center in the first inning, putting the Raiders on the board. However, the Tigers responded with four hits, including RBI singles from Max Harris and Tanner Nelson, to take a 2–1 lead after one inning.

In the second inning, Doane capitalized on a series of hits and errors, scoring 10 runs. The inning featured a home run by Brayden Jones and a two-run homer from Adam Vulcano, extending Doane's lead to 12–1 after two.

Northwestern fought back in the third inning, scoring four runs on five hits. Ranier Castillo's RBI single and Grant Rychnovsky's two-RBI double were key in cutting the deficit. Doane added two runs, maintaining a 14–5 lead after the third inning.

Brody Ayers homered to left center in the fourth inning for the Raiders, while Doane added a solo home run from Carter Roth to keep its lead at 15–6 after four innings.

In the fifth inning, Devin Dirkx hit a solo homer, and Calab Caciari's RBI single brought another run home for the Raiders, making it 15–8, but Doane held the Raiders scoreless the rest of the way to secure the win.

How It Happened
Doane completed the doubleheader sweep in a 6–4 contest in game two. The Red Raiders managed eight hits and four runs, including a home run, but could not overcome the Tigers' early scoring surge.

Doane took an early lead in the first inning with a solo home run by Grant Sommers, making it 1-0.

In the second inning, Doane extended its lead to 3-0. Johnny Vulcano scored on a failed pickoff attempt, followed by a sacrifice fly from Carter Roth that brought in Brayden Jones.

Northwestern responded in the third inning. Grant Guidry doubled, and Devin Dirkx followed with a two-run homer to left field, closing the gap to 3-2. The Tigers answered with two runs of their own, including RBIs from Johnny Vulcano and Brayden Jones, maintaining a 5-2 lead.

In the fifth inning, the Raiders closed the gap again. Nikolai Wede and Guidry both reached base and eventually scored, thanks to an RBI double by Ranier Castillo and an RBI groundout by Jack Craig, trimming the deficit to 6-4.

Doane kept the Raiders off the board in the final frames, resulting in a 6–4 victory for the Tigers.
