All Gas, No Brakes in Softball's Saturday Sweep

YANKTON, S.D. - Northwestern put together 26 runs and 13 stolen bases over two games as they get a high-scoring sweep over Mount Marty on Saturday, winning 16-2 and 10-3.

Game 1: NWC 16 - MMU 2 (5 innings)

How It Happened:
In the first inning, Mount Marty took the early lead with two runs, but Northwestern responded emphatically in the top of the second inning. Cassidy Gors singled to drive in the first run, and Kavri Van Kekerix and Faith Kacmarynski followed with RBI singles. Tatum Schmalbeck's two-RBI double extended the lead, and Paige Kingery added another run with a single. Allison Koontz capped the inning with an RBI double, making it 8-2 Raiders by the end of the second inning.

The momentum continued in the third inning as Northwestern added three more runs. Ava Gross scored on an error, followed by Rylee Bomgaars crossing the plate on Schmalbeck's triple. Kingery then drove in Schmalbeck with a sacrifice fly. After just two and a half innings, the Raiders led by nine, 11-2.

In the fourth inning, Northwestern's offense refused to slow down. Sydney Jacobs doubled and was brought home by a Van Kekerix double. Schmalbeck added another RBI with her second double, and Kingery's single brought in the final run of the inning, pushing the score to 15-2. The Raiders rounded out their scoring in the fifth inning with a run from Jacobs, who doubled and scored on a Van Kekerix single, concluding the game at 16-2.

Game Notes
  • Northwestern doubled seven times in the contest; Tatum Schmalbeck and Sydney Jacobs led the team with two each.
  • Schmalbeck and Kavri Van Kekerix had similar stat lines: three hits, four RBIs, and two runs.

How It Happened:
To get things started, Ava Gross reached first on an error and advanced around the bases, scoring on Tatum Schmalbeck's groundout for 1-0 lead. Mount Marty equalized in the second inning, scoring an unearned run on a series of fielding errors. Northwestern reclaimed the lead in the third inning as Jenny Luevano walked and advanced on an Ava Gross double before coming around to score.

The fourth inning saw Northwestern extend its lead significantly. After Allison Koontz singled and was replaced by pinch runner Berkley Johannsen, Cassidy Gors singled to bring Johannsen home. Gross added a two-RBI double, scoring Gors and Luevano to give the Raiders a 5-1 lead.

The fifth inning added another run for Northwestern when Aly Vortherms, pinch running for Paige Kingery, scored on a fielding error. A single by Rylee Bomgaars and an error in the sixth allowed Gross and pinch runner Myla Murphy to score. Another error saw Bomgaars cross home and extended the Raider lead 9-1.

Mount Marty responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, but it wouldn't be enough. The top of the seventh saw Kavri Van Kekerix single and advance on a sacrifice, setting the stage for Gross's RBI double, bringing the final tally to 10-3 in favor of the Raiders.

Game Notes
  • Tatum Schmalbeck has quickly developed as an ace with a 7-0 record in the circle.
  • Ava Gross was solid at the plate with three hits and two RBIs, all three hits were doubles.
  • Blink and you'll miss it, the Raiders stole 10 bases, a program record.
  • Cassidy Gors led the team with three stolen bases.
