Northwestern Trades Wins with Ranked Warriors

FREMONT, Neb. - Northwestern found themselves in their first ranked matchup since their trip to Arizona to start the month of March. Tthe Raiders split the series with #19 Midland on Friday, dropping the first game 4-1 before bouncing back for a 4-2 win.

How It Happened: 
Northwestern took an early lead in the second inning when Allison Koontz walked and later scored on a throwing error, giving the Raiders a 1–0 advantage. The score remained unchanged through the third and fourth innings as both teams were held scoreless.

In the fifth inning, Midland capitalized on errors to score two runs. An RBI single was followed by the second run scoring on a fielding error, shifting the lead to 2–1. Midland extended its lead in the sixth inning with an additional two RBI singles to take a 4–1 lead. The Raiders were unable to rally in the final inning, leaving two runners on base. 

Game Notes
  • Ava Gross notched the lone hit for the Raiders in the contest.
  • The two teams combined for just three strikeouts.
  • Audrie Kohl gave up just one hit in her two innings of work.
  • Tatum Schmalbeck struck out two Midland batters.

How It Happened:
Midland took an early lead in the first inning after an RBI single before a run stole home to give the Warriors led 2–0 after the first inning. In the second inning, Northwestern responded as Paige Kingery walked and advanced to third on a single by Allison Koontz. Kingery scored on a fielder's choice by Cassidy Gors, making the score 2–1. 

The game remained scoreless through the third to sixth innings, with both teams unable to capitalize on any scoring opportunities. In the seventh inning, the Raiders were able to tie the game when Rylee Bomgaars singled and was brought home by a double from Tatum Schmalbeck. 

It would take extra innings, but Northwestern took the lead in the ninth. Paige Kingery singled and scored on an error by the left fielder, which allowed Sydney Jacobs to reach base and later score on another error, securing a 4–2 lead. The Warriors were unable to respond in the bottom of the ninth, resulting in a Raiders victory.

  • Seven separate Raiders recorded a hit.
  • Cassidy Gors stole three bases in the contest, a career high.
  • Paige Kingery was an offensive weapon for the Raiders scoring two runs, notching one hit, and walking three times.
  • Tatum Schmalbeck delivers another pitching gem: seven innings, two hits, and no runs.
Up Next: Northwestern heads on the road on Saturday, March 28, as they travel to face Mount Marty. The game is set for 1 p.m. in Yankton, South Dakota.
