Raiders’ Season Ends in Round of 16

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In a nail-biter at Municipal Auditorium, four-seeded Northwestern faced a tough 74–72 loss against top-seeded Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) on Thursday. The Red Raiders were on fire early, building up a 16-point lead with just under eight minutes left in the second half, but the Lions clawed back to emerge in a dramatic finish.

The game tipped off with Northwestern setting a steady pace, as Jalen Langsy sank free throws at 18:10 to get things rolling. Jesse Van Kalsbeek and Langsy were pivotal in maintaining the Raiders' rhythm, with Van Kalsbeek hitting a three-pointer at 15:41 and adding a fast-break layup at 7:19 to keep the momentum alive.

Despite the Raiders' strong start, the Lions kept it close, briefly taking the lead at 14:17. Northwestern quickly countered, highlighted by Langsy's triple at 9:23 and a swift bucket from Van Kalsbeek, reclaiming the upper hand. Langsy's three-pointer at 1:55 pushed Northwestern's lead to 12, wrapping up the half with a 42–35 advantage.

Into the second half, Northwestern surged ahead to a 16-point lead at 7:59, buoyed by a three from Manny Hammonds. However, Freed-Hardeman wasn't finished, mounting a comeback that steadily chipped away at Northwestern's lead.

The Lions tied it up at 70 with Phil Horton's layup at the 1:23 mark, setting up a tense finale. After Kaleb Booth's clutch free throws with under a minute to go to put Northwestern up two, Horton responded with an and-one on the other end to punctuate the late rally.
