Raiders Grab Win on GPAC Opening Day

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Northwestern picked up a split in Friday's GPAC opener, defeating Morningside 3-1 in the first game and falling on a walk-off walk in the second contest.

How It Happened
Northwestern secured a 3-1 victory over Morningside in game one on Friday, with a two-run sixth inning proving decisive. The Red Raiders' pitching staff allowed just five hits over seven innings, effectively containing the Mustangs' offense.

Romani Perez's RBI double in the bottom of the first inning gave the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead. Northwestern responded in the top of the third when Nikolai Wede homered to right center, tying the game 1-1 through three innings.

In the sixth inning, the Raiders broke the tie with two runs. Devin Dirkx scored on an RBI single by Isaac Short, and Bryce Click later crossed home plate on Brody Ayers' single to left field, pushing the Raiders ahead 3-1 after six innings.

Northwestern's pitching and defense held firm in the seventh inning with Brody Ayers earning the save, securing a 3-1 victory over Morningside.

Game Notes:
  • Nikolai Wede homered for a team-leading fourth time this season.
  • Brody Ayers went 2-for-3 with an RBI and also picked up his fourth save.

How It Happened
Northwestern fell to Morningside 9–8 in a tightly contested matchup in game two on Friday.

Northwestern and Morningside were tied at 2–2 after the first inning. Ranier Castillo scored on a sacrifice fly by Jack Craig, and Devin Dirkx came home on a single by Calab Caciari. Morningside responded with two runs, including an RBI double from Jaxon Bunkers.

In the fourth inning, the Red Raiders added four runs to take a 6–3 lead. Brody Ayers doubled down the left field line, scoring Kevin Rubio. Guidry walked with the bases loaded to add another run, followed by Craig's two-RBI single. However, the Mustangs responded with five runs in the bottom half, highlighted by a three-RBI double from Luke Blackmon, to lead 8–6 through four innings.

Northwestern tied the game at 8–8 in the sixth inning. Dirkx hit a two-run home run to right-center, scoring Nikolai Wede. The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh, when Morningside took a 9–8 lead after an unearned run scored on a walk.
