Men’s Basketball Advances to Second Round with Convincing Win

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Northwestern secured a commanding 100-63 victory over Taylor (Ind.) on Friday at the Bultman Center to advance to the second round of the NAIA tournament. The Red Raiders shot an impressive 56.9% from the field, including a sizzling 52.2% from downtown, to keep the game firmly in their grasp.

"I thought we came out with a great edge," head coach Colton Kooima said. Kooima highlighted the team's resilience, noting, "Our competitive spirit weathered their runs and weathered the storm a little bit." He emphasized the defensive adjustments that stifled Taylor's early success from beyond the arc, adding, "Our competitiveness on defense in those last ten minutes of the first half really set the tone."

The Raiders jumped out to an early lead with sharp offensive execution. Jesse Van Kalsbeek set the pace with a layup and a free throw right out of the gate. Jalen Langsy kept the momentum going, sinking multiple treys while Van Kalsbeek made impactful defensive plays, snagging a few key steals and turning them into fast break highlights.

As the first half unfolded, Northwestern stretched their lead, taking full advantage of Taylor's turnovers. Van Kalsbeek and Langsy were pivotal, helping the team close the half with a 55-37 advantage, showcasing efficient shooting and strong defensive rebounds.

Starting the second half, Northwestern continued their onslaught. Kaleb Booth hit an early triple and Langsy added a layup, further extending the lead. Van Kalsbeek remained a force with a defensive rebound and a dunk, keeping the Raiders' momentum alive.

The Red Raiders didn't let up as the half wore on. Booth nailed another three-pointer, and Brennan Reid dominated in the paint, pushing the gap to a staggering 39-point lead at one stage.

As the clock wound down, Manny Hammonds drained a shot from beyond the arc, and Carter Van Hulzen added a tip-in to seal the deal with a 100-63 win in front of the Bultman crowd.
