Finding Purpose in Every Step: Bailey Ahlquist’s Journey Through Dance

ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Bailey Ahlquist's journey in dance began at age two and has evolved into a lifelong pursuit of discipline, growth, and purpose. Now a competitive dancer at Northwestern College, Ahlquist describes the sport not only as a creative outlet but also as a training ground for resilience and teamwork.

"Sports have taught me how to stay disciplined and grounded, especially when progress feels slow," Ahlquist said. "I've learned how to work through frustration, accept correction, and keep going even when motivation isn't high."

Her commitment to the process—showing up day after day, embracing feedback, and trusting small improvements—has shaped her both on and off the floor. "Dance has taught me accountability to my team, my coaches, and myself. Most importantly, it's taught me to trust that consistent effort, paired with patience and faith, leads to growth over time," she added.

FAMILY ROOTS AND LASTING SUPPORT
Behind Ahlquist's steady drive is the unwavering support of her grandmother, whom she credits as her greatest role model. "My grandma has always been my biggest role model," Ahlquist said. "She invested her time and energy into my dancing, making sure I practiced, stretched, and stayed committed. As I've grown, she's continued to show up, coming to my competitions, encouraging me, and reminding me not to give up on myself."

That encouragement laid the foundation for the athlete she is today, one who values perseverance and finds motivation in community. When she's not in the studio, Ahlquist enjoys spending time outdoors, trying new recipes, and being with family and friends—activities that help her stay balanced and grounded.

CELEBRATING WOMEN IN SPORTS
As a proud member of Northwestern's dance team, Ahlquist feels deeply connected to the larger community of female athletes. National Girls and Women in Sports Day, she said, is a reminder of the dedication and camaraderie that define women's athletics.

"It's meaningful because it recognizes the commitment and perseverance of all female athletes," she said. "It's a moment to appreciate the work that often goes unseen. My words can't describe the gratitude I have to compete alongside the women on my team who push themselves daily and support one another through both our successes and challenges."

Ahlquist believes that setting aside a day to celebrate women's sports helps bring deserved visibility to the discipline and sacrifice behind every performance. "Women's sports don't always receive the recognition they deserve," she said. "Celebrating them helps bring visibility to the dedication, discipline, and sacrifice behind the performances as well as recognition to the sport itself."

INSPIRING THE NEXT GENERATION
Looking ahead, Ahlquist hopes her journey encourages younger girls to pursue sports with courage and patience.

"I hope to inspire younger girls by being honest about the process, and not just the medals or trophies," she said. "I want them to see that growth comes from showing up consistently, learning from mistakes, and staying patient with themselves. If they can find confidence in effort rather than perfection, I believe sports can become a powerful place for growth."
