GPAC Tournament Run Comes to an End at Hastings

HASTINGS, Neb. — Northwestern College faced a tough challenge on Wednesday, falling to Hastings College 116-88 at Lynn Farrell Arena. Despite putting up 26 assists and 41 bench points, the Raiders couldn't overcome the Broncos' offensive barrage.

Northwestern kicked off the first quarter with a strong start, hitting 11 of 15 shots. Allison Piercy and Margo Schuiteman led early scoring, with Piercy sinking a trey at 8:06, assisted by Maddie Pottebaum. However, turnovers proved costly, with Northwestern committing nine, allowing Hastings to capitalize and build momentum.

Hastings was on fire, making 18 of 23 shots, including eight triples. The Raiders managed two blocks, but the Broncos' long-range shooting and points off turnovers pushed them ahead by double digits. Emily TerWee hit a jumper to close the quarter, but a Broncos' three-pointer at the buzzer left Northwestern trailing 46-26.

The second quarter saw Northwestern's push, as Pottebaum hit a free throw and Schuiteman nailed a three-pointer, chipping away at the lead. Jenna Kluxdal added consecutive free throws, and Ellie Karolevitz hit from downtown. Yet, Hastings kept the pressure on, leading 64-37 after a series of baskets.

Piercy's three-pointer ended the quarter, but turnovers and Hastings' efficient shooting allowed the Broncos to extend their lead to 71-42.

In the third quarter, Northwestern's bench contributed seven points, but Hastings held firm, with the Raiders converting five of 15 shots. The Raiders did find success with a three-pointer from Aubrey Schwieso at 4:14 and a jumper by TerWee at 2:05.

Hastings widened the gap further, excelling from the free throw line with 11 of 12 made shots. By the quarter's end, the Raiders trailed 101-56, with the Broncos holding a commanding lead.

Entering the fourth, Northwestern mounted an offensive surge, scoring 11 baskets on 15 attempts, including three threes, and assisting on eight plays. The bench was instrumental, adding 21 points. Mya Kochuten capped the quarter with a trey and free throws, wrapping up with a 32–15 run, though still trailing 116–88 at the buzzer.
