Raiders Rally for Extra-Innings Win Over WWU, Fall to Columbia in Nightcap

COLUMBIA, Mo. – A late rally gave Northwestern the extra-innings win in game one of Thursday's action before the Raiders fell to No. 23 Columbia (Mo.) in the second outing.

How It Happened
Northwestern secured a 2-1 victory over William Woods (Mo.) on Thursday, with the Raiders scoring the game-tying and go-ahead runs in the late innings.

William Woods broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning as a single and an error, setting the stage an RBI single, giving the Owls a 1-0 lead through three innings.

Northwestern responded in the seventh inning. Calab Caciari, pinch hitting for Brody Ayers, doubled down the right field line. Bryce Click advanced Caciari to third with a sacrifice bunt, and Grant Rychnovsky drove him in with a double to left center, tying the game at 1-1.

The momentum continued in the eighth inning for the Red Raiders. Dalton Garbers was placed on second base and advanced to third on a single by Karsten Mathsen. Ranier Castillo then delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Garbers to score the go-ahead run, putting the Raiders ahead 2-1.

Northwestern's defense held strong in the bottom of the eighth, securing the victory with a final score of 2-1.

How It Happened
Northwestern's comeback attempt in game two was stopped by No. 23 Columbia, as the Raiders fell 10-5. The Red Raiders' offense was highlighted by a two home runs from Nikolai Wede, but the Cougars capitalized on a six-run second inning to secure the victory.

Northwestern began the first inning with T.J. Silliman scoring after Tyler Schroeder's single, setting the score at 1-0. Columbia responded with a pair of runs, capitalizing on a throwing error and a pair of doubles to take a 2-1 lead after the first inning.

In the second, Wede hit his first career home run, a solo homer that tie the game at 2-2. However, the Cougars surged ahead with a six-run inning, highlighted by a grand slam, leaving the score at 8-2 after two innings.

Wede continued his strong performance with another solo home run in the fourth, trimming the deficit to 8-3. The score remained unchanged through the bottom of the fourth as the Cougars failed to add to their lead.

The Raiders added two runs in the fifth inning, starting with Brody Ayers scoring on Devin Dirkx's bases-loaded walk, followed by Bryce Click scoring on a walk by Ranier Castillo. The Cougars managed to score two runs as well in their half of the inning, bringing the score to 10-5 after five innings.

The sixth and seventh frames went scoreless for both teams, as the Cougars came away victorious.

Game Notes:
  • Nikolai Wede hit his first career home runs, hitting one in the second and another in the fourth.
  • Wede collected his first career multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and two runs.
  • Devin Dirkx walked twice and brought home a run.
  • Tyler Schroeder and Ranier Castillo also brought runs home.
  • Grant Rychnovsky struck out four batters in the start.
  • Zain Stark pitched 2.2 innings, striking out three batters.
  • Jacob Lewis threw two strikeouts in six batters faced.
